31st October:

South Uist: 3 Brent Geese were at Smerclate.

Barra: An Olive-backed Pipit was in North Bay today and another was in Castlebay.

30th October:

North Uist: Blackcaps were at Lanagss Lodge and in Lochmaddy. A 1st winter Mediterranean Gull was on the beach at Rushgarry, Berneray. 14 Fieldfares were near Clachan Sands. 32 Whooper Swans were resting on Vallay Strand in the late afternoon.

Marine Sightings: A small pod of at least 7 Risso's Dolphins headed south off Tiumpan Head this morning.

29th October:

Lewis: 37 Snow Buntings came in off the sea at the Butt this morning. A Chiffchaff was at South Dell, 2 Blackcaps and a Brambling were at Borve. A Wheatear was on Ballatrushal beach today. A Swallow was seen in South Galson. A juvenile Glaucous Gull and 2nd winter Iceland Gull were at Loch Tiumpan.

North Uist: The Red-breasted Goose was with Barnacle Geese to the west of Loch Paible, at the southern end of Balranald this afternoon. The American Golden Plover was on Loch Paible this afternoon and then in fields by Loch Sandary later in the afternoon. A Cackling Goose was on Balemore machair. A Snow Bunting was on Baleshare.

South Uist: A female Lesser Scaup and juvenile Scaup are on the west side of Loch Bee; also 30 Black-tailed Godwits were in the south-west corner. A Little Egret was on West Loch Ollay.

Barra: The Green-winged Teal was at Ardmhor. 8 Pomarine Skuas and a Sooty Shearwater flew south past Brevig this afternoon.

28th October:

Lewis: A juvenile Glaucous Gull was ar Loch Tiumpan this morning before flying east.

Insects: A Spruce Carpet, Angle Shades, Silver Y and a Rush Veneer were trapped in South Glendale last night.

27th October:

Lewis: A Blackcap was in Skigersta.

South Uist: the Great Crested Grebe was off Balgarava. A Grey Wagtail and a Blackcap were at Loch Eynort. A Snow Bunting was on the Range.

 

26th October:

Barra: 4 Sooty Shearwaters flew south past Brevig.

 

25th October:

Lewis: 2 Waxwings were at Ardnish; just to the south of Lews Castle Grounds.

Harris: 2 drake Surf Scoters were in the Sound of Taransay.

North Uist: A Red-breasted Goose was with Barnacle Geese in the fields at the southern end of Balranald; just north of the mouth of LOch Paible. A juvenile American Golden Plover was on Loch Paible. A drake Green-winged Teal was at Loch Sandary with 3 Pink-footed Geese nearby. 3 Pink-footed Geese were at Balranald; also a Blackcap by the campsite. A Chiffchaff was at Callernish House. The imm. Ring-necked Duck was still on Loch na Gearrachun.

South Uist: 2 Snow Buntings were on the beach at Ardivachar.

Barra: A Yellow-browed Warbler and 2 Blackcaps were in Castlebay. 2 Blackcaps were in Gleann.

24th October:

North Uist: A Long-tailed Tit and Chiffchaff were at Claddach Kirkibost today. A Brambling was at Langass Lodge.

South Uist: A Blue Tit and 2 Bramblings were seen in Carnan this afternoon.

Barra: A Green-winged Teal was at Ardmhor. 2 Long-tailed Tits were at Gleann and another 10 were in Castlebay.

 

23rd October:

Lewis: A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Port Voller, Point. 2 Sooty Shearwaters and a Storm Petrel were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry today.

North Uist: A Pallid Swift was seen over Carinish this morning.

Benbecula: The Spotted Redshank was behind MacLean's bakery. A Chiffchaff was at Torlum.

South Uist: A Long-tailed Tit was at Stilligarry this evening. The Great Crested Grebe was off Balgarva. 3 Bramblings were at North Loch Eynort.

Barra: A Green-winged Teal was at Ardmhor. A Yelow-browed Warbler was at Creachan.

Marine Sightings: 2 Minke Whales were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry. 3 Humpback Whales and a Fin Whale were seen off Tiumpan Head.

22nd October:

Lewis: 2 Bramblings and 3 Swallows were at Loch Stiapabhat.

St. Kilda: The Little Bunting and a Lapand Bunting were on Hirta.

Benbecula: The Spotted Redshank was behind MacLeans Bakery again this afternoon. 2 Scaup were on Loch dun Mhurchaidh.

South Uist: The Great Crested Grebe and 17 Slavonian Grebes were off Balgarva this morning. A Little Egret was at the south-west corner of Loch Bee this afternoon, along with a single Pintail. A Swallow was at Stilligarry.

Barra: A female Velvet Scoter was off Vatersay. 2 juvenile Velvet Scoters were off Ardmhor. 11 Long-tailed Tits were seen at Morghan.

21st October:

Lewis: A Swallow was seen at Fivepenny machair. 56 Sooty Shearwaters and 2 Storm Petrels were seen from the Stornoway - Ullapool ferry this afternoon.

St. Kilda: A Little Bunting was on Hirta today along with the Spotted Sandpiper, a Lapland Bunting, Jack Snipe, Woodcock and 2 Rooks.

Harris: 2 drake Surf Scoters were in the Sound of Taransay.

North Uist: The Pied Flycatcher is still in Carinish. The immature Ring-necked Duck is still on Loch na Gearrachun. 2 Bramblings were at Clachan Farm this afternoon and a Tree Sparrow was at Callernish House.

South Uist: 70 Fieldfares were around South Glendale.

Barra: 2 Long-tailed Tits and a Treecreeper were trapped at Creachan; also a Jackdaw at Gleann.

Marine Sightings: 2 Minke Whales and 40 Common Dolphins were seen from the Stornoway - Ullapool ferry this afternoon.

20th October:

Lewis: A White-billed Diver was reported flying south off Skigersta this afternoon. 9 Snow Buntings were at Port of Ness.

St. Kilda: A Little Bunting was on Hirta today. The Spotted Sandpiper is also still present and feeding around the helipad.

North Uist: 2 Cackling Geese are on the island with 1 at the west end of Vallay this morning and another individual was at Balranald by Loch Scarie (the Loch Paible bird). An immature Ring-necked Duck was on Loch na Gearrachun, to the west of Vallay Strand. Small numbers of Fieldfare were seen moving through the islands today. 16 Whooper Swans flew south-east over Paible late afternoon and 52 (including 27 juveniles) were on Loch nam Magarlan, behind Kilmuir Church. The Great White Egret was seen at Loch Dheoir, Clachan Sands today. The Pied Flycatcher was still in Carinish this morning.

South Uist: A Yellow-browed Warbler and 2 Bramblings were at Carnan.

Barra: 2 Long-tailed Tits were seen on the island along with several Blackcaps and a Woodcock.

Marine Sightings: 6 Harbour Porpoise were off Eoropie beach.

Other: 3 or 4 Pipistrelle bats were in Ranish this evening.

19th October:

Lewis: A juvenile Glaucous Gull and a Snow Bunting were seen at South Galson. 5 Snow Buntings were at the Butt.

St. Kilda: The Spotted Sandpiper and a Lapland Bunting are on Hirta along with 2 Rooks and a Woodcock.

North Uist: 35 White-fronted Geese (in 2 flocks) flew south over Paible this afternoon.

Barra: A Mistle Thrush and a scattering of Blackcaps were on the island today.

 

18th October:

Lewis: 95 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry. A Pomarine Skua and a Sooty Shearwater flew past Skigersta. 6 Snow Buntings and a Wheatear were seen at the Butt.

St. Kilda: The Spotted Sandpiper is still on Hirta and a Lapland Bunting was also there.

North Uist: The Pied Flycatcher is still in Carinish; also a male Blackcap there. The Cackling Goose was at Loch Paible again today. 2 Pomarine Skuas were seen from the ferry between Lochmaddy and Uig.

Benbecula: The Spotted Redshank was seen again behind MacLean's Bakery.

South Uist: A Red-necked Grebe was of Balgarva.

Marine Sightings: 2 Minke Whales were seen in the MInch between Ullapool and Stornoway.

17th October:

Lewis: A Lapland Bunting and 7 Snow Buntings were seen at the Butt whilst 40 Sooty Shearwaters were seen off-shore. An Iceland Gull and a Leach's Petrel flew past Skigersta.

St. Kilda: the Spotted Sandpiper is still on Hirta and a Lapland Bunting was also there.

North Uist: The Swainson's Thrush is still in Carinish; also Pied Flycatcher and Snow Bunting flew over.

South Uist: A Treecreeper was seen in Stiliigarry this evening.

Barra: A Lesser Whitethroat was at the Manse and a Treecreeper was also on the island.

16th October:

Lewis: A Pechora Pipit was seen briefly at Port of Ness in the morning before it flew south. 2 Snow Buntings were at South Galson. 2 Long-tailed Skuas and a Sooty Shearwater flew south past Labost this morning.

North Uist: A Swainson's Thrush was in Carinish; also a Pied Flycatcher still. The Great White Egret was at Loch Euphort today.

Benbecula: The Yellow-browed Warbler was at Gramsdale.

South Uist: 2 Grey Phalaropes were at Balgarva. A Grey Phalarope was at Peninerine. The drake Ring-necked Duck and a Scaup were on Loch Bee; east of the causeway. A Snow Bunting was at the southern end of the Loch Bee causeway. A Great Crested Grebe was in North Bay / Mol Mor. A Lesser Whitethroat was at Druidibeg. A Grey Wagtail was at Loch Eynort.

15th October:

Lewis: 40 Snow Buntings were at the Butt. A Great Shearwater, 900 Sooty Shearwaters and a Pomarine Skua were seen in the Minch.

North Uist: 2 Long-tailed Skuas and a Pomarine Skua were seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry this morning. The Cackling Goose was at Loch Paible this morning. The Pied Flycatcher is still in Carinish.

Benbecula: A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Gramsdale at the Flodda junction.

South Uist: 2 Grey Phalaropes were at Balgarva; also a Curlew Sandpiper there in the afternoon. A Red-necked Grebe and a Great Crested Grebe were in North Bay / Mol Mor. A drake Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Bee, east of the causeway; also a Snow Bunting at the southern end. 74 Black-tailed Godwits were at Ardivachar. 120 Black-tailed Godwits and 3 Swallows were on the Range.

Barra: The Hornemann's Arctic Redpoll was at Creachan; also 2 Yellow-browed Warblers. Yellow-browed Warblers were also at Bolnabodach, North Bay and Earsary. A Siberian Chiffchaff was at Cleat.

14th October:

Lewis: 7 Snow Buntings were at the Butt. A Glossy Ibis flew over Port of Ness and a Turtle Dove was seen nearby. An American Golden Plover was seen in flight over Loch Stiapabhat with 400 Golden Plover. A Yellow-browed Warbler was seen at Callanish.

St. Kilda: A Lapland Bunting and 2 Jack Snipe were on Hirta.

North Uist: The Pied Flycatcher is still in Carinish. A Cackling Goose was at Loch Paible this morning. 51 Black-tailed Godwits were also at Loch Paible. A Grey Phalarope was seen on Baleshare and a Lapland Bunting flew over.

South Uist: A Grey Phalarope was off Balgarva. A Great Crested Grebe was in North Bay / Mol Mor; also 82 Black-tailed Godwits flew south.

Barra: The Hornemann's Arctic Redpoll was still at Glen and presumed to be the same individual seen at Creachan in the afternoon. A Yellow-browed Warbler was also at Creachan and a Spotted Flycatcher was at Ardmhor.

13th October:

North Uist: A Great White Egret was at Clachan a Luib.

Benbecula: The Spotted Redshank was behind MacLeans Bakery. A juvenile Curlew Sandpiper was on the shore at Balivanich. The drake Ring-necked Duck was on Coot Loch.

South Uist: A juvenile White-rumped Sandpiper was at Balgarva this morning; also a Little Stint there. A Cattle Egret was at Eochar. 2 Grey Phalaropes were at Peninerine. A Grey Phalarope was at Balgarva this evening.

Barra: The Hornemann's Arctic Redpoll was still at Glen this evening.

12th October:

Lewis: A Glossy Ibis flew over Loch Tiumpan towards Port Voller this afternoon. A Yellow-browed Warbler was seen at Manor Park, Stornoway. A Yellow-browed Warbler was in Lews Castle Grounds. A Snow Bunting was at the Butt. A Yellow-browed Warbler was still near Achmore. A Barred Warbler was seen by the road between Cross and Skigersta.

St. Kilda: A Jack Snipe was on Hirta.

Benbecula: A Grey Phalarope and a Curlew Sandpiper were on the beach at Balivanich. The drake Ring-necked Duck was at Coot Loch.

South Uist: A Grey Wagtail was at North Loch Eynort. 3 Swallows were at Ormiclate.

Barra: The Hornemann's Arctic Redpoll was at Glen; also a Grey Wagtail over there. A Yellow-browed Warbler, a Garden Warbler and a Greenland Redpoll were at Creachan. 4 or 5 Arctic Terns were off Eoligarry.

11th October:

Lewis: Yellow-browed Warblers were at Tolsta and in Lews Castle Grounds. The Glossy Ibis was still at Ranish and another was reoported from Callanish.

St. Kilda: A Lapland Bunting was on Hirta.

Harris: The drake Surf Scoter was still in the Sound of Taransay.

Benbecula: A drake Ring-necked Duck was on Coot Loch. The Spotted Redshank was in the channel behind MacLeans Bakery again this evening.

Barra: A Hornemann's Arctic Redpoll was at Glenn today.

 

10th October:

Lewis: A Wilson's Petrel flew past Labost this morning; also 2 Grey Phalaropes, 7 Pomarine Skuas, 13 Arctic Skuas and 3 Great Skuas. 3 Pomarine Skuas and 2 Great Skuas past Labost this afternoon whilst 207 Sooty Shearwaters flew past during the day. The Yellow-browed Warbler is still in South Galson. A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Lochganvich, to the west of Achmore this evening. The Blyth's Reed Warbler is still at Lionel / Port of Ness. A Redwing was seen in Lionel. The Glossy Ibis is still at Ranish today.

St. Kilda: The Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler is still on Hirta.

North Uist: 40 Whooper Swans flew south over Balemore this afternoon; 20 were resting at Loch Paible and 11 were on Vallay Strand. A single Redwing was at Balranald. A Leach's Petrel, 2 Pomarine Skuas and 2 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the Uig - Lochmaddy ferry. A Swallow was at Claddach Cnoc a Lin. A Curlew Sandpiper was at Grenitote.

Benbecula: The Spotted Redshank was in the channel to the north of MacLeans Bakery again this afternoon. 100 Whooper Swans flew south over Gramsdale early evening.

South Uist: The Wood Warbler is still in the trees at the Loch Eynort junction, opposite Cothrom. 7 Swallows were on the Range.

Barra: 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were at Creachan.

9th October:

Lewis: The Blyth's Reed Warbler was seen at Lionel / Port of Ness. A Grey Phalarope and 7 Snow Buntings were at the Butt. The Yellow-browed Warbler was in South Galson. The Glossy Ibis was in Ranish. 3 Grey Phalaropes, 3 Long-tailed Skuas and 2 Leach's Petrels were seen off the Briagh in the morning.

St. Kilda: The Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler is still on Hirta

North Uist: An American Golden Plover was at Balranald.

Benbecula: 2 Grey Phalaropes were off Balivanich this evening.

South Uist: The Wood Warbler is at the Loch Eynort junction; opposite Cothrom still. A Storm Petrel was seen off Ardvule in the morning. The Great Crested Grebe was off North Bay (Mol Mor) this morning. 200 Black-tailed Godwits were on Bornish machair.

8th October:

Lewis: The Yellow-browed Warbler is still in South Galson. The Blyth's Reed Warbler was between Lionel and Port of Ness. A Grey Phalarope was seen on the headland at the Butt. A Yellow-browed Warbler was in a plantation along the main road between Stornoway and Barvas. A Great Shearwater and 2,000+ Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry. A Long-tailed Skua and 150 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the Stornoway - Ullapool ferry in the morning. A Glossy Ibis is at Ranish.

St. Kilda: The Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler is still on Hirta

North Uist: A Grey Phalarope flew south over Lag Gorm, Baleshare this afternoon. A Curlew Sandpiper was at Grenitote. The Pied Flycatcher was still in Carinish.

South Uist: A Grey Phalarope was at Peninerine. A Grey Phalarope was on the beach by the Orosay net factory. A Grey Phalarope flew south past Ardvule this morning.

Barra: A Common Rosefinch was at Ardmhor. A Common Rosefinch was at Nask and 2 Garden Warbler were also seen on the island.

7th October:

Lewis: A Blyth's Reed Warbler was between Lionel and Port of Ness. A Yellow-browed Warbler was at South Galson. A Yellow-browed Warbler was also at Bru. 294 Sooty Shearwaters, a Storm Petrel and a Grey Phalarope were seen from Labost in a 3 hours watch this morning. Another Grey Phalarope and 2 Sooty Shearwaters flew south-west past Labost this afternoon. 19 Snow Buntings were at the Butt.

St. Kilda: A Spotted Sandpiper was on Hirta.

North Uist: 260+ Barnacle Geese flew south over Carinish this morning. A sea-watch from Griminish Point (15:10 - 17:15) produced 3 Leach's Petrels, a Storm Petrel, 28 Manx Shearwaters, 23 Sooty Shearwaters, 4 puffins, a Pomarine Skua and a Great Skua heading west. 60 Whooper Swans flew south and 60 Barnacle Geese flew south-west also past Griminish Point. 3 Storm Petrels, 3 Manx Shearwaters and 4 Arctic Skuas were seen from the Lochmaddy - Skye ferry today.

Benbecula: 2 Curlew Sandpipers were on the beach in Balivanich.

South Uist: The Wood Warbler is still in the trees opposite Cothrom at Loch Eynort road end. 2 Scaup and 24 Whooper Swans were at Loch Bee. 3 Brent Geese were feeding on the north side of Loch Bee. 1 Manx Shearwater, 22 Great Northern Divers, 10 Red-throated Divers, 4 Arctic Terns, 375 Barnacle Geese, 13 Golden Plover, 32 Snipe and 1 Common Scoter flew south past Ardvule this morning.

Barra: 4 Grey Phalaropes, 8 Sooty Shearwaters. 8 Manx Shearwaters, 9 Great Northern Divers, 1 Arctic Tern, 7 Scaup, 7 Brent Geese and 150 Barnacle Geese past Grein Head this morning. A further 2 Grey Phalaropes were off Grein Head in the afternoon. An American Golden Plover flew over Bolnabodach this morning.

Marine Sightings: Common Dolphins and Bottle-nosed Dolphins were seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry.

6th October:

Lewis: 373 Barnacle Geese flew south past South Galson today. 1,250 Barnacle Geese were seen heading south over the west side of the island today.

North Uist: A big flight of Barnacle Geese were reported to have arrived at Sollas today.

Benbecula: A Spotted Redshank was at Uachdar in the tidal channel by Macleans Bakery.

South Uist: The Wood Warbler was still at Loch Eynort road end, opposite Cothrom. A Leach's Petrel, 2 Grey Phalaropes and a Sooty Shearwater flew south past Ardvule (07:45 - 13:30); as well as 34 Great Northern Divers, 17 Red-throated Divers, 3 Manx Shearwaters, a Puffin, 86 Golden Plover, 196 Snipe, 9 Tufted Ducks and 6 Brent Geese. Also a Snow Bunting came in off the sea there this evening and both Whooper Swans and Barnacle Geese were seen heading south. 51 Barnacle Geese dropped in at Hebridean Jewellery this evening and another 45 flew over.

Barra: 6 Leach's Petrels, 10 Sooty Shearwaters, 8 Manx Shearwaters and 14 Great Northern Diver flew south past Grien Head (09:25 - 11:25). 2 Leach's Petrels, a Grey Phalarope and a Sooty Shearwater flew south past Aird of Chaolais, Vatersay in the afternoon.

5th October:

Lewis: The drake Ring-necked Duck is still on Loch Stiapabhat.

North Uist: The Pied Flycatcher is still in Carinish.

South Uist: The American Golden Plover was at Boisdale again this morning. A Hawfinch was reported flying south over Carnan this morning. The Wood Warbler was in the Sycamores at Loch Eynort road end - opposite Cothrom. A Grey Phalarope was off Peninerine; 100m offshore on the sea. A seawatch from Ardvule (15:45 - 18:40) produced 2 Pomarine Skuas (a juvenile and an adult), 2 juvenile Arctic Skuas, a Leach's Petrel, a Storm Petrel, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, a Manx Shearwater, 2 Grey Phalaropes, 24 Golden Plover, 60 Kittiwakes, a Great Northern Diver and 3 Red-throated Divers. 300 Black-tailed Godwits were on Bornish machair. A Grey Wagtail was at Loch Eynort.

Barra: The Yellow-browed Warbler was at Brevig.

4th October:

Lewis: The drake Ring-necked Duck is still at Loch Stiapabhat.

St. Kilda: The Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler is still on Hirta today and a Buff-bellied Pipit was also seen there.

Harris: A drake Surf Scoter was in the Sound of Taransay. A Yellow-browed Warbler was seen at Amhuinnsuidhe. 16 Black-tailed Godwits were seen at Seilebost.

North Uist: A Curlew Sandpiper was still at Loch Paible and a juvenile American Golden Plover was in fields just to the south at Paiblesgarry. The Pied Flycatcher is still in Carinish. A Glaucous Gull was seen at Loch Dubhasairidh. 8 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Sandary. 30+ Sooty Shearwaters were lingering off Balranald this evening.

Benbecula: A Lapland Bunting was seen at the south side of Culla Bay. 2 Sooty Shearwaters flew south at Stinky Bay.

South Uist: The American Golden Plover was at Boisdale again this morning. A Wood Warbler was seen at the Loch Eynort junction, opposite Cothrom. A Lesser Whitethroat was at South Loch Eynort and a Grey Wagtail was at North Loch Eynort. 2 Grey Phalaropes were seen off Ardvule with one heading south off the point and the other in the south bay; also an Arctic Skua, pale-bellied Brent Goose and a Long-tailed Duck heading south there. 16 Black-tailed Godwits were off Hebridean Jewellery.

Barra: Yellow-browed Warblers are at Brevig and Castlebay.

3rd October:

St. Kilda: A Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler was found on Hirta this morning.

North Uist: 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were in willows outside Uist Asco this morning and another was seen at Loch Portain. An American Golden Plover was heard calling in flight over Carinish early morning.

South Uist: A Grey Wagtail was seen at Ardvule.

 

2nd October:

Benbecula: A Grey Phalarope was at Borve Point today. 2 Curlew Sandpipers were on the beach off Balivanich. An adult Pomarine Skua flew west over the causeway between Benbecula and South Uist this afternoon.

South Uist: 2 Sooty Shearwaters flew past Ardvule in a 2 hour watch this morning. 67 Black-tailed Godwits were at Ardvule / Bornish. A Curlew Sandpiper was off Hebridean Jewellery. A juvenile American Golden Plover was on the machair at Boisdale. A Brambling was at North Loch Eynort.

Barra: A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Brevig and another bird was in Castlebay.
