31st October:

Lewis: At least 30 Waxwings were in Balallan this afternoon. 8 Waxwings flew over the sawmill in Stonroway Castle Grounds and 6 were at Kennedy Terrace. The immature drake King Eider was off the Butt lighthouse still today.

South Uist: A Waxwing was in Bornish. A drake Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Stilligarry. A female / juvenile Ring-necked Duck was on Loch na Cuithe Moire, Askernish. A Rook flew north at Smerclate. A Brambling and Woodcock were in South Glendale.

30th October:

Lewis: A Jack Snipe was in Garrabost. In Stornoway 20 Waxwings were in Church Street and 11 were at Kennedy Terrace. 40 Waxwings were briefly in Urquhart Gardens, Stornoway. The drake Green-winged Teal was on Loch Stiapabhat. A Hawfinch was photographed in a garden at Goathill, Stornoway today.

North Uist: A Waxwing was in Claddach Kirkibost. 6 Pink-footed Geese were at Knockintorran.

South Uist: A Waxwing was in Bornish. 3 Pintail were on Loch Ardvule.

29th October:

Lewis: The drake Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Tiumpan.

North Uist: 2 Waxwings were at Claddach Kirkibost.

South Uist: The Squacco Heron was still at Smerclate this morning. A Waxwing was briefly in South Glendale.

Barra: 2 Yellow-browed Warblers and a Waxwing were on the island today.

28th October:

Lewis: The immature drake King Eider was off the Butt again today. 25 Waxwings were in Stornoway at the hospital. 34 Waxwings were outside the council offices in Stornoway.

North Uist: A Hawfinch was in Carinish this afternoon before it flew north.

South Uist: The Squacco Heron was still at Smerclate this afternoon. 2 Waxwings were at Loch Druidibeg today.

Barra: A Red-backed Shrike was at Scurravel in Dunscurrivel garden. 7 Waxwings were also on the island.

27th October:

Lewis: 8 Waxwings were feeding on Cotoneaster in Lewis Street, Stornoway this afternoon. An immature drake King Eider was off the Butt this evening. 30+ Waxwings were on James Street, Stornoway.

Harris: 50+ Waxwings and 3 Brambling were behind the Harris Hotel in Tarbet. A Snow Bunting was at Meavaig bealach. A male Ring Ouzel was at Huisinish jetty and 2 Bramblings were at the car park.

North Uist: The Snow Goose was on Vallay.

South Uist: 7 Snow Buntings were on the beach at Howmore and 10 Bramblings were by the bridge. The Squacco Heron was at Smerclate again today.

Barra: A Redstart, 7 Blackcaps and 2 Chiffchaffs were at Creachan along with 7 Waxwings, 10 Long-tailed Tits and 3 Treecreepers. 5 Waxwings, 3 Blackcaps and a Treecreeper were in Northbay. 5 Long-tailed Tits a Blackcap and a Treecreeper were at Ardveenish. A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Cuithir.

 

26th October:

Lewis: 4 Snow Buntings were on Siadar beach. The drake Green-winged Teal is on Loch Stiapabhat. 20 Waxwings were at the UHI campus, Stornoway. 5 Snow Buntings were north of Port of Ness. 4 Snow Buntings were in South Galson this evening.

Harris: 50+ Waxwings were in the grounds of Harris Hotel. A Waxwing was also at Scaladale.

North Uist: 3 Waxwings were in Lochmaddy near the bank; also 6 Brambling. 8 Waxwings were at Langass Lodge early afternoon whilst 50+ Fieldfare flew over there in the morning. The Snow Goose is still on Vallay. 9 Waxwings were in a garden at Cliasmol, near Meavaig.

South Uist: 7 Snow Buntings were on the beach at Howmore; also 8 Brambling by the bridge. 12 Long-tailed Tits were in Dridibeg plantation. The Squacco Heron was still at Smerclate this morning. The Ring-necked Duck was on Loch an Eilein, Askernish. A Wheatear was at Aird Mhichael.

Barra: 2 Yellow-browed Warblers, a Hawfinch and 3 Waxwings were seen on the island today.

Insects: 2 Angle Shades, a Dark Sword-grass, Rusty-dot Pearl and a Diamondback moth were trapped in South Glendale last night.

25th October:

Harris: A Waxwing was seen in Scaladale.

North Uist: 52 Whooper Swans flew south over Claddach Kirkibost today whilst 2 Chiffchaffs and a Blackcap were in gardens there.

South Uist: The Squacco Heron was still at Smerclate today; a Grey Wagtail also flew south there this morning. A Ring-necked Duck was on Loch an Eilein, Askernish. A female Common Scoter was in the north bay at Ardvule. 38 Whooper Swans were on Loch Hallan. 3 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Crossbills, 5 Blackcaps and 4 Siskin were at North Loch Eynort. 4 Waxwings, 8 Siskins and 3 Bramblings were in South Glendale.

Barra: 5 Waxwings and a Hawfinch were in Northbay this morning.

Insects: 1 Brindled Ochre, 5 Angle Shades, 2 Silver Y, 1 Small Wainscot and a Spruce Carpet were caught in South Glendale last night. At North Loch Eynort 1 Angle Shades, 6 Autumn Green Carpet, 2 Red-green Carpet, and 1 Grey Pine Carpet. A Red Admiral was in Carinish.

24th October:

Lewis: A Green-winged Teal was on Loch Stiapabhat. A Waxwing and 2 Snow Buntings were seen at the Butt.

Harris: A Waxwing was at Quidinsh.

North Uist: The Snow Goose was at the west end of Vallay. A Waxwing was at Langass Lodge. 2 Bramblings were in Carinish.

South Uist: A Squacco Heron was at Smerclate. 8 Waxwings and 3 Long-tailed Tits were briefly in South Glendale; also 3 Brambling there. The Grey Wagtail was on the stream at Howmore again today; also a Blackcap there.

Barra: 2 Waxwings and 2 Hawfinch were on the island. 4 Rooks flew over Glen. Single Treecreepers were at Brevig and North Bay.

23rd October:

Lewis: A Waxwing was at Cross war memorial. The Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Tiumpan. 3 Snow Buntings were in South Galson. A Lesser Whitethroat, Pied Flycatcher, 2 Brambling and a Chiffchaff were in South Dell. 10+ Waxwings were at the the junction of Goathill and Anderson Road, Stornoway this evening

Harris: 4 Snow Buntings and 2 Bramblings were at Meavaig bealach this morning.

North Uist: A Waxwing and a Chiffchaff were at Langass Lodge. 5 Waxwings were in Lochmaddy, behind Maddy B&B. 2 Chiffchaffs were at Claddach Kirkibost. 2 Brambling were in Carinish.

South Uist: 3 Snow Buntings were on the beach at Howmore and a Grey Wagtail was along the stream there in the morning. 2 Yellow-browed Warblers and at least 1 Waxwing were at North Loch Eynort; also a Brambling and a couple of Siskins there. 4 Rooks at Smerclate flew off towards Barra. 3 Brambling were in South Glendale.

Barra: 7 Long-tailed Tits and a Waxwing were on the island.

22nd October:

Lewis: 5 Waxwings were at Marvig plus a large arrival of Fieldfare. A Snow Bunting was at the Butt. A Waxwing flew south-west over Port of Ness and 2 Grey Phalaropes and a Sooty Shearwater were off-shore. 16 Wawxwings were seen in Lews Castle grounds today. The Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Tiumpan.

Harris: A Snow Bunting, Woodcock and Brambling were at Meavaig this morning.

North Uist: A Waxwing flew south over Carinish this afternoon and a Brambling this morning.

South Uist: A Yellow-browed Warbler, Willow Warbler, Blackcap, 9 Waxwings and 6+ Brambling were at North Loch Eynort as well as around 8 Common Redpolls. A Yellow Wagtail was on the shore at Milton; also 2 Swallows there. 5 juvenile Brent Geese were on the Range near Ardivachar. 4 Bramblings a Blackcap and a Chiffchaff were at Howmore. Single Brmablings were also at Druidibeg and Grogarry Lodge. 26 Black-tailed Godwits were on Bornish machair. 2 Blackcaps and a Woodcock were in South Glendale.

Barra: A Hawfinch, 4 or 5 Waxwings, 4 Treecreepers, a Wood Warbler and a Kingfisher were on the island today.

21st October:

Lewis: A Barred Warbler was seen in Swainbost in a garden opposite the shop. 3 Jack Snipe were at the Butt.

St. Kilda: 2 Grey Wagtails, a Jack Snipe and 27 Woodcock were on Hirta.

North Uist: A Brambling was in Carinish. 4 Fieldfare, a Brambling and 2 Blackcaps were at Langass Lodge. A Willow Warbler was at Claddach Kirkibost.

South Uist: 2 Snow Buntings were on the beach at Howmore. A Mistle Thrush was along the road to Druidibeg. 2 Blackcap and a Brambling were in South Glendale. 32 Barnacle Geese flew south at Howmore this morning.

Barra: 5 Waxwings were in Brevig. 3 Waxwings were at Glenn along with 3 Common Pedpolls. A Wood Warbler was at Cuithir. Also 3 Mistle Thrush and a Ring Ouzel were on the island.

20th October:

Lewis: 17 Waxwings were opposite Stornoway golf club this morning. A Barred Warbler was at Borve and a probable Siberian Lesser Whitethroat was at South Dell.

Harris: 10 Bramblings were in a garden at Cliasmol.

North Uist: A Waxwing was heard at Langass Lodge. A Sandwich Tern was off Hougharry this afternoon. 2 Swalows flew south in Carinish this morning; also 2 Brambling there.

South Uist: 4 Waxwings, a Brmabling, lots of Redwings and 20 Fieldfare were at North Loch Eynort. A Waxwings was in Askernish. 100 Fieldfare, 120 Redwings and 2 Blackcaps were in South Glendale.

19th October:

Lewis: 9 Waxwings were still around the golf course in Stornoway today. A drake Green-winged Teal was at Loch Stiapabhat. The Barred Warbler and Pied Flycatcher were still in South Dell; plus a Lesser Whitethroat there. Thousands of Redwings and smaller numbers of Fieldfare and Brambling seen arriving off the sea from the west throughout the day in Ness.

Harris: 10 Bramblings were in a garden at Cliasmol.

St. Kilda: 4 Snow Buntings were on Hirta.

North Uist: The Snow Goose was seen on Vallay again this morning. 18 Fieldfare were at Claddach Kirkibost. 3 Bramblings were in Carinish. An American Golden Plover was seen on Baleshare. A Brambling was at Am Bliochan. 250 Redwings / Fieldfare were on Clettereval with around 2/3rds Redwings.

South Uist: A Waxwing, 2 Bramblings, 12 Fieldfare and a couple of Blackcaps were seen in South Glendale.

Barra: 3 Waxwings were on the island. The Ring-necked Duck is still in Bolnabodach.

18th October:

Lewis: 35 Waxwings were in the Stornoway golf course area today; also 4 Bramblings and 10 Fieldfare.

Harris: The Short-toed Lark was reported from the track to the pier at Huisinish again today.

North Uist: A Barred Warbler was at Langass Lodge and a Garden Warbler seen later in the afternoon. 4 Fieldfare were in Lochmaddy. 2 Bramblings were at Am Bliochan, Paible.

 

17th October:

Lewis: 3 Waxwings were at Goathill Road, Stornoway. The drake Green-winged Teal was at Loch Stiapabhat and the American Golden Plover was on the machair to the north. A Barred Warbler and a Pied Flycatcher were at South Dell. 2 Greenland Redpolls were at Barvas. A Siberian Chiffchaff was at Tobson, Great Bernera. A Ring Ouzel was at Adabrock, Port of Ness in the afternoon. The drake Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Tiumpan.

Barra: A Yellow-browed Warbler was in Castlebay. A Waxwing was at Creachan. A Pomarine Skua and Sooty Shearwater flew past Brevig.

Insects: A Birndled Ochre, Dark Sword-grass, Angle Shades and Small Wainscot were trapped in South Glendale last night.

16th October:

Lewis: 5 Waxwings were in Stornoway, near the entrance to the golf club. A Lapland Bunting flew south-west over Port of Ness. A Green-winged Teal and adult Iceland Gull were on Loch Stiapabhat; whilst the American Golden Plover was nearby on the machair. The drake Ring-necked Duck was at Loch Tiumpan and 12 Sooty Shearwaters were off Tiumpan Head.

Harris: The drake Surf Scoter was seen in the Sound of Taransay off Luskentyre. 20+ Black-tailed Godwits were at Seilebost.

North Uist: A juvenile Iceland Gull was on Loch Sandary. A Glaucous Gull was seen at Loch Euphort, near Taigh Alasdair. The Cackling Goose and a Snow Goose were again amongst a flock of Barnacle Geese at the west end of Vallay this morning. A Willow Warbler was at Claddach Kirkibost.

South Uist: 9 Waxwings were at North Loch Eynort. A Wheatear was at Smerclate and 5 Swallows were at Orosay.

Barra: A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Borve. Waxwings were at Creachan and in North Bay.

15th October:

Lewis: 18 Waxwings were seen by the war memomorail in Stornoway.

St. Kilda: A Lapland Buntnig and a Snow Bunting were seen on Hirta.

North Uist: A Cackling Goose and a Snow Goose were amongst a flock of Barnacle Geese at the west end of Vallay today. 2 Pintail were at Loch Paible.

South Uist: A Common Rosefinch was at North Loch Eynort.

Barra: 9 Waxwings were at Cuithir briefly. The Yellow-browed Warbler and a Waxwing were at Creachan.

14th October:

Lewis: 6 Waxwings were in Stornoway, near the entrance to the golf club. 4 Sooty Shearwaters and a Snow Bunting were seen at the Butt this afternoon. 5 Sooty Shearwaters flew past Skigersta this morning.

North Uist: A Siberian Lesser Whitethroat was seen at Griminish pier before it flew in the direction of Callernish House. 7 Great Northern Diver, 3 Red-throated Divers, 6 Whooper Swans, 13 Barnacle Geese, 2 Long-tailed Ducks, 234 Kittiwake and 1 Purple Sand flew southwest past Griminish Point (10:00 - 12:30); also Snow Bunts on the headland. A juvenile Long-tailed Skua and 2 Leach's Petrels were seen from ghe ferry between Uig and Lochmaddy.

Barra: 13 Waxwings were seen around the island. A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Creachan. 2 Glossy Ibis were at Eoligarry.

13th October:

Lewis: The drake Ring-necked Duck was at Loch Tiumpan.

Benbecula: A Grey Phalarope was still in Stinky Bay today.

Barra: A 1st winter Little Gull was at Scurrival. 2 Waxwings were at Creachan. 6 Glossy Ibis were at Eoilgarry and the Ring-necked Duck was at Bolnabodach.

 

12th October:

Lewis: An American Golden Plover was on the machair by Loch Stiapabhat.

Harris A drake Surf Scoter was in the Sound of Taransay. A Short-toed Lark was at Huisinish, on the beach to the north of the village.

Benbecula: A Grey Phalarope was still at Stinky Bay.

South Uist: 3 Arctic Terns were at Ardvule.

 

11th October:

Lewis: The drake Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Tiumpan.

North Uist: A juvenile Cuckoo was in Carinish today. A Swallow was in Claddach Kirkibost.

South Uist: A Common Rosefinch was in Bornish. The juvenile Ring-necked Duck was on Loch na Cuithe Moire. A Lesser Yellowlegs was on the western edge of Loch Aird an Sgairbh, to the south of Kildonan. Swallows were seen at Loch Bornish and Kildonan.

Barra: 9 Glossy Ibis were still at Eoligarry today. A Little Bunting was seen at Bolnabodach. A Barred Warbler and Common Rosefinch were in North Bay.

10th October:

Lewis: The drake Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Tiumpan.

Benbecula: 2 Grey Phalaropes were at Stinky Bay.

South Uist: 3 Lapland Buntings were at Ardvule where a Little Tern and 32 Brent Geese seen passing between 15:00 - 16:00. A Common Rosefinch was in Bornish. A Ring-necked Duck was at Askernish on Loch na Cuithe Moire.

Barra: The Swainson's Thrush was still in Castlebay by the football pitch. At 9 Glossy Ibis are still at Eoligarry; also a Yellow-browed Warbler in the last garden there. The Arctic Warbler was in the plantation at Ardmhor.

 

9th October:

Lewis: A Barred Warbler was in Port of Ness. 2 juvenile American Golden Plovers were at Eoropie.

North Uist: 2,000+ Pink-footed Geese flew south or south-east from Baleshare early morning today. A Swallow was over Carinish. A male Redstart was in Lochmaddy, opposite the police station.

Benbecula: 2 Grey Phalaropes were in Stinky Bay.

South Uist: A juvenile Hooded Merganser was on Loch Ardvule this afternoon but apparently flew south in the evening. A Yellow-browed Warbler was in Snishival plantation. 5 Swallows were at Smerclate. 2 Bramblings were at North Loch Eynort. A Common Rosefinch was in Bornish.

Barra: A Swainson's Thrush was in Castlebay by the football pitch. The 9 Glossy Ibis are still at Eoligarry; the Green-winged Teal was also there. 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were on the island, at Creachan and Earsary. The Arctic Warbler was in the plantation at Ardmhor. The Ring-necked Duck was at Loch an Ail, Bolnabodach.

 

8th October:

Lewis: A Brambling was in South Galson. The Ring-necked Duck is still at Loch Tiumpan.

North Uist: 380 Pink-footed Geese and 304 Barnacle Geese were at Loch Paible this morning. Over 200 Pink-footed Geese were on the North Ford off Carinish this evening along with 100's of Barnacle Geese.

Benbecula: 3 Grey Phalaropes were to the south of Stinky Bay.

South Uist: A juvenile Little Stint was at LA3 on the Range. 2 Common Rosefinch area still in Bornish. A Pied Flycatcher and Corncrake were at Howmore. A Pectoral Sandpiper was at Carnan. A Curlew Sandpiper was at Balgarva. 300+ Barnacle Geese, 50 Pink-footed Geese and 5 Brent Geese were on th South Ford off Carnan. 120 Pink-footed Geese flew east over Howmore and many more flocks were seen during the day - often disoreintated in the low cloud and rain.

Barra: An Arctic Warbler was in the plantation at Ardmhor. The 9 Glossy Ibis are still at Eoligarry this morning; also a Green-winged Teal was seen there and an Osprey. The Ring-necked Duck is still on Loch an Ail, Bolnabodach.

7th October:

Lewis: The Ring-necked Duck is still at Loch Tiumpan. A 2nd winter Iceland Gull was at Bragar.

North Uist: A Whinchat was at the southern end of Loch Paible. 124 Barnacle Geese and 2 Pink-footed Geese were at Balranald. 16 Barnacle Geese and 60 Pink-footed Geese were on Vallay. 320 Barnacle Geese and 34 Pink-footed Geese were at Loch Paible.

Benbecula: 2 Grey Phalaropes were just south of Stinky Bay this morning. 20 Pink-footed Geese flew south-east from Stinky Bay; also around 50 Barnacle Geese heading north.

South Uist: 2 Common Rosefinch are still in Bornish.

Barra: The 9 Glossy Ibis are still at Eoligarry this morning. The Ring-necked Duck is still on Loch an Ail, Bolnabodach. A Yellow-browed Warbler was at Creachan.

 

6th October:

Lewis: The American Golden Plover was on the machair by Loch Stiapabhat. The drake Ring-necked Duck was at Loch Tiumpan.

St. Kilda: A Ring Ouzel and 36 Redwings were on Hirta today with 13 Barnacle Geese and 13 Pink-footed Geese seen flying over.

North Uist: 2 Pintail were on Loch Paible.

South Uist: 2 Common Rosefinch are in Bornish. The drake Ring-necked Duck was on Loch a Chnoic Bhuide. 6 Leach's Petrels, a Storm Petrel, 5 Arctic Terns and an Arctic Skua were seen off Ardvule this morning.

Barra: A Ring-necked Duck is on Loch an Ail, Bolnabodach this morning. 9 Glossy Ibis flew north-north-east over Bolnabodach in the morning; relocating to Eoligarry.

5th October:

South Uist: 2 Common Rosefinch are now in Bornish.

Insects: 18 Small Wainscot, 2 Dark Sword-grass, 1 Red Sword-grass, 6 Brindled Ochre, 3 Silver Y, 1 Red-line Quaker and a Pearly Underwing were trapped in South Glendale last night. A Red Sword-grass was also caught in Carinish.

4th October:

North Ust: 150 Barnacle Geese flew south over Carinish this morning.

Benbecula: 3 Grey Phalaropes were in Stinky Bay this morning apparently joined by a 4th in the afternoon.

South Uist: The Common Rosefinch was still in Bornish. 3 Sooty Shearwaters, 2 Arctic Terns and a Storm Petrel flew past Ardvule this morning.

Barra: A Red-throated Pipit was in rough grass between Brevig and Creachan late morning but was not subsequently relocated. The Ring Ouzel was at Glen and a Common Rosefinch was at Garrygall.

3rd October:

Lewis: The Lesser Yellowlegs was at Loch Stiapabhat again today. A Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Tiumpan.

North Uist: The Stilt Sandpiper was on the pool at the southern end of Loch Paible early afternoon but then flew to north side of tidal area. 40 - 45 Barnacle Geese flew south over Loch Paible. A sea-watch from Griminish Point (09:00 - 12:30) produced 65 Sooty Shearwaters, 69 Manx Shearwaters, 658 Gannets, 73 Kittiwakes, 7 Leach's Petrels, 3 Pomarine Skuas, 2 Arctic Skuas, 17 Red-throated Divers, 4 Great Northern Divers, 12 Red-breasted Mergansers, a Pintail, 3 Arctic Terns, a Common Tern, 2 Grey Phalaropes, 8 Turnstone, 3 Golden Plover and a Redshank heading south-west. 3 Snow Buntings also flew south over the headland.

South Uist: A Common Rosefinch was in Bornish. The juvenile American Golden Plover, 11 Curlew Sandpipers and 15 Ruff were reported at LA2 on the Range.

Marine Sightings: A Minke Whale was feeding close inshore at Griminish Point this morning.

2nd October:

Lewis: The Lesser Yellowlegs was at Loch Stiapabhat again today.

North Uist: A Sabine's Gull was seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry this morning; 25 minutes out from Lochmaddy this morning.

South Uist: The drake Ring-necked Duck was on Loch a Chnoic Bhuide, just south of Howmore. The Common Rosefinch is still in Bornish. A Sabine's Gull, Leach's Petrel and 7 Sooty Shearwaters flew south past Ardvule this morning; also 2 Slavonian Grebes, a Storm Petrel, 16 Manx Shearwaters and an Arctic Skua and an Arctic Tern south there. 8 Curlew Sandpipers were on the Range at LA2.

Barra: A Grey Phalarope was on the beach at Eoligarry.

 

1st October:

Lewis: The Lesser Yellowlegs was at Loch Stiapabhat again today.

North Uist: A Stilt Sandpiper was on the pool at the southern end of Loch Paible today; a Grey Phalarope was at the mouth of Loch Paible. A Lapland Bunting was just north of Callernish House.

South Uist: An American Golden Plover was on Bornish machair and a Sooty Shearwater was off Ardvule this morning. A Common Rosefinch was in Bornish. The drake Ring-necked Duck was on Loch a Chnoic Bhuide, just south of Howmore. The juvenile American Golden Plover was on the Range at LA2 along with 10 Curlew Sandpipers and 11 Ruff.

Barra: The Philadelphia Vireo was seen in Castlebay this afternoon although it was elusive; the Red-eyed Vireo was also still there. A 2nd winter Iceland Gull was at Cleat.
