31st August:

Lewis: 137 Sooty Shearwaters and 25 Storm Petrels were seen on the ferry between Ullapool and Stronoway.

North Uist: The 1st winter Wilson's Phalarope was at the southern end of Loch Paible in the pool this morning along with 2 Ruff and 5 Black-tailed Godwits.

South Uist: 56 Black-tailed Godwits were on the Howmore River this morning. 18 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff were at Ardvule this afternoon.

Barra: 2 Grey Phalaropes were seen just off the island from the Tiree ferry today; also 9 Sooty Shearwaters and 190 Storm Petrels were seen on the crossing.

Marine Sightings: A Humpback Whale and 2 Fin Whales were off Tiumpan head this morning. 7 Minke Whales, 118 Common Dolphins, a Sunfish and a Tope Shark were seen between Tiree and Barra.

30th August:

North Uist:The 1st winter Wilson's Phalarope was at Loch Paible early morning on the pool at the south end before flying along the western shore. It was then seen at Balranald on the shore at Aird an Runair before returning to Loch Paible and the pool at the southern end in the late afternoon.

Benbecula: A juvenile - 1st winter Mediterranean Gull was in Stinky Bay at high tide this evening.

South Uist: 151 Black-tailed Godwits were on Drimsdale machair this morning. 40 Black-tailed Godwits were at Ardkenneth. 100 Black-tailed Godwits were in the south-west corner of Loch Bee.

Marine Sightings: 2 Fin Whales and 3 Humpaback Whales due east of Tiumpan Head this morning.

29th August:

At sea: 6 Sooty Shearwaters sat on the sea between St. Kilda and Leverburgh this evening; also 18 Storm Petrels.

North Uist: A 1st winter Wilson's Phalarope was at Loch Paible, feeding mostly at the southern end this morning; also 15 Black-tailed Godwits.

South Uist: 244 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff were on Kildonan machair this afternoon. A Green Sandpiper was in the north-west corner of Loch Bee.

Insects: 2 Convolvulus Hawkmoths, Angle Shades, 1 Pine Carpet, 1 Anomalous, 4 Northern Deep-brown Darts, 6 Neglected Rustics, Acleris effractana and 2 Matilella fusca were trapped in South Glendale last night. An Angle Shades, 2 Heath Rustic, 3 Dark Marbled Carpet, Epinotia ramella, Epinotia tenerana and an Acleris rhombana were caught at Loch Eynort.

28th August:

Lewis: 40 Black-tailed Godwits were by Loch Branahuie.

Harris: 196 Common Scoters were in the Sound of Taransay.

North Uist: A Temminck's Stint was at Loch Paible today.

South Uist: 46 Black-tailed Godwits and 2 Ruff were on Stilligarry machair. 4 Black-tailed Godwits were on the Howmore River.

Marine Sightings: 2 Orcas were seen off the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry today.

27th August:

Lewis: 6 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the Stornoway - Ullapool ferry this morning. 2 Sooty Shearwaters and 2 Sabine's Gulls were seen from the ferry between Stornoway and Ullapool in the afternoon. 2 Sooty Shearwaters flew past Tiumpan Head in the afternoon.

South Uist: 4 Sooty Shearwaters and 30 Storm Petrels were seen from the Mallaig - Lochboisdale ferry today.

Insects: Moths trapped at South Glendale last night included a Bee Moth, Brown China-mark, Northern Deep-brown Dart, Pink-batted Sallow, Heath Rustic and 2 Epinotia caprana.

Marine Sightings: 2 Fin Whales were seen to the south of Tiumpan Head in the morning. 2 Humpback Whales and a couple of Minke Whales were seen from the ferry to Ullapool in the morning. A Fin Whale and around 4 Minke Whales as well as 6 Risso's Dolphins and numerous Common Dolphins were seen from the ferry to Stornoway around midday. An Orca was seen from the return leg of the same ferry in the afternoon.

26th August:

North Uist: A Curlew Sandpiper was seen on the beach at Hougharry this evening.

Benbecula: 38 Black-tailed Godwits were on Borve machair and a Whimbrel was close by at the point.

South Uist: A Snowy Owl was seen on the machair at Kildonan. 15 Black-tailed Godwits were on the Howmore River in the morning.

25th August:

Lewis: A Sooty Shearwater, 2 Storm Petrels, a male Common Scoter and a Whimbrel were seen at South Glason.

North Uist: 3 Whimbrel were at Balranald.

South Uist: 42 Black-tailed Godwits were at Milton and 124 were at Kildonan. 2 Storm Petrels were seen off Ardvule during an hour watch this afternoon.

24th August:

St. Kilda: The drake Harlequin Duck was still in Village Bay this afternoon.

North Uist: 82 Black-tailed Godwits were on Baleshare and 18 Black-tailed Godwits were at Balranald.

Marine Sightings: 2 HUmpback Whales were seen off Tiumpan Head.

23rd August:

St. Kilda: A drake Harlequin Duck was by the pier around midday.

Lewis: 47 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the ferry between Ullapool and Stornoway today.

North Uist: A 2nd cal yr Glaucous Gull was on Loch Paible.

South Uist: 15 Black-tailed Godwits were on the Howmore River this morning. 41 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Bornish and a Whimbrel was at Ardvule.

Marine Sightings: 2 Fin Whales and 100 Common Dolphins were seen 9 miles south-east of Stornoway around midday.

22nd August:

Barra: A Cory's Shearwater flew south off Brevig this afternoon; also a Sooty Shearwater flew south there.

Insects: 50 species of moths were trapped in South Glendale last night including a Grey Chi, an Anomalous, 4 Oblique Carpets, a Chestnut-coloured Carpet and 3 Epinotia immundana. 46 species were caught in Carinish including 20 Pink-barred Sallows.

Marine Sightings: 2 Humpback Whales and a Fin Whale were seen to the south Tiumpan Head this morning.

21st August:

Lewis: A Pomarine Skua, 20 Sooty Shearwaters and 40 Storm Petrels were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry today.

South Uist: 28 Black-tailed Godwits were on the Howmore River this evening.

Marine Sightings: A Fin Whale was seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry today.

20th August:

Lewis: 20 Black-tailed Godwits were at Parkend today.

South Uist: 34 Black-tailed Godwits were by the Howmore River this morning.

Barra: A Balearic Shearwater and 9 Sooty Shearwaters flew south past Borve. 43 Sooty Shearwaters flew south past Vatersay in the morning. 7 Sooty Shearwaters flew south past Brevig in the evening.

 

19th August:

North Uist: 2 Ruff were at Loch Sandary. A Ruff and 27 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Paible.

South Uist: 407 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Sooty Shearwaters, 3 Storm Petrels, 1 Black Guillemot, 6 Arctic Terns and 3 Red-throated Divers flew south at Ardvule this morning. 55 Black-tailed Godwits were at Howmore this morning.

18th August:

North Uist: 97 Black-tailed Godwits were on Loch Paible. 9 Black-tailed Godwits were on Baleshare.

South Uist: 2,000 Manx Shearwaters, 120 Sooty Shearwaters, 2 Great Shearwaters and a Cory's Shearwater were seen from the Lochboisdale - Mallaig ferry this afternoon; just beyond the mouth of the loch.  9 Storm Petrels, 14 Fulmars, 7 Sooty Shearwaters, 1158 Manx Shearwaters, 1 Great Northern Diver, 2 Black-throated Divers, 4 Red-throated Divers and 116 Gannets flew south at Ardvule this morning. A Ruff on Bornish machair.

Barra: 5 Sooty Shearwaters flew south of Vatersay in the afternoon and 5 Sooty Shearwaters flew south off Brevig in the evening.

Marine Sightings: 2 Minke Whales, 30 Common Dolphins and 10 Risso's Dolphin were seen at the mouth of Lochboisdale from the ferry this afternoon.

 

17th August:

Lewis: 46 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the ferry between Ullapool and Stornoway today.

North Uist: 49 Black-tailed Godwits and 2 Ruff were by Loch Sandary this evening. 4 Ruff and 70 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Paible.

South Uist: 20 Black-tailed Godwits flew over Loch Grogarry this morning.

Marine Sightings: 2 or 3 Humpback Whales, 2 Minke Whales, 30 Common Dolphins and 7 Harbour Porpoise were seen from the Stornoway - Ullapool ferry today.

16th August:

Lewis: A Great Shearwater, 700 Sooty Shearwaters and a Sabine's Gull was seen from the ferry between Ullapool and Stornoway today.

North Uist: 55 Black-tailed Godwits and 3 Ruff were on Baleshare this morning.

Benbecula: A Ruff was in Stinky Bay.

 

15th August:

North Uist: 3 Black-tailed Godwits were by Loch Sandary.

Benbecula: A juvenile Mediterranean Gull was in Stinky Bay.

South Uist: 2 flocks of Black-tailed Godwits (Ca. 50 and 30) flew south off Howmore this morning and 14 dropped in at Drimsale machair this afternoon. A Little Gull was seen on Loch Bee.

Insects: 42 species of moths were trapped on Eriskay last night including Northern Eggar, 2 Bee Moth and  Agriphila geniculea.

14th August:

North Uist: 25 Black-tailed Godwits were on Baleshare this afternoon.

South Uist: 7 Black-tailed Godwits were on the beach at Howmore this morning.

Insects: A Convolvulus Hawkmoth was trapped in South Glendale last night.

13th August:

Lewis: A Leach's Petrel was seen off Aird, Point this afternoon.

South Uist: The Viking Gull is still at Ardivachar.

Marine Sightings: 2 Fin Whales were seen distantly off Aird, Point today. At least 6 Minke Whales and a small pod of Risso's Dolphins werer off Tiumpan Head this morning.

12th August:

South Uist: 37 Black-tailed Godwits were in the south-west corner of Loch Bee this afternoon and 7 Whimbrel flew south at Ardivachar.

11th August:

South Uist: 2 Black-tailed Godwits were on the Howmore River and 13 flew north.

10th August:

Lewis: 4 Storm Petrels and a Sooty Shearwater were seen off South Galson.

South Uist: 2 Storm Petrels flew south at Ardvule this morning. 5 Black-tailed Godwits were on the Howmore River early this morning. The 2nd winter Little Gull was on Loch an't-Saile. 5 Whimbrel were on the Range and 2 Black-tailed Godwits were in the south-west corner of Loch Bee.

Barra: The juvenile Mediterranean Gull was at Traigh Mhor before flying off to the west in the afternoon.

 

9th August:

South Uist: 24 Black-tailed Godwits were in the south-west corner of Loch Bee today. 2 Black-tailed Godwits were on the machair at Howmore this morning. 12 Whimbrel flew south over Ardvule this afternoon. The 2nd winter Little Gull was at Loch an't-Saile.

7th August:

Lewis: A Kingfisher was seen in Stornoway today between the Porter's Lodge and Bayhead.

South Uist: A Grey-headed Wagtail was near Ormiclate castle.

Marine Sightings: 4 or 5 Humpback Whales were off Tiumpan Head today although distant; also a couple of Risso's Dolphins and Harbour Porpoise.

6th August:

North Uist: 2 Black-tailed Godwits were by Loch Bhrusda, Berneray.

Benbecula: 2 juvenile Black-tailed Godwits were in fields just south of Balivanich.

South Uist: 11 Black-tailed Godwits were in the south-west corner of Loch Bee.

Barra: The juvenile Mediterranean Gull was off Allasdale. A Sooty Shearwater flew south past Brevig this evening.

Marine Sightings: A Humpback Whale was seen around 5 km east of Tiumpan Head; also a Minke Whale and Harbour Porpoise this morning there.

5th August:

Benbecula: 2 juvenile Mediterranean Gulls were reported from Stinky Bay again today.

South Uist: 4 Whimbrel and a Black-tailed Godwit were on the machair at Kildonan.

Barra: 12 Black-tailed Godwits flew south-west over Eoligarry early afternoon.

 

4th August:

At sea: 2 Sooty Shearwaters and 21 Storm Petrels were seen from the ferry between Barra and Tiree today.

Marine Sightings: A Humpback Whale, 2 Minke Whales and at least 5 Risso's Dolphins were off Aird, Point.

3rd August:

Benbecula: 2 juvenile Mediterranean Gulls were in Stinky Bay this morning.

South Uist: 12 Black-tailed Godwits flew south at Howmore this morning.

Marine Sightings: 2 Sei Whales were seen recently. 4 HUmpback Whales, 2 Fin Whales and 2 Minke Whales were reported from Tiumpan Head today as well as 5 groups of Risso's Dolphins.

2nd August:

Harris: A Pectoral Sandpiper and 23 Black-tailed Godwits were seen at Northton.

North Uist: 25 Black-tailed Godwits were at Grenitote.

Benbecula: 18 Black-tailed Godwits flew south over Liniclate this afternoon.

South Uist: 9 Black-tailed Godwits were in the south-west corner of Loch Bee. The Viking Gull is still at Ardivachar. Birds moving south off Ardvule this morning included 18 Fulmars, 1481 Manx Shearwaters, 15 Storm Petrels, 19 Kittiwakes, 5 Arctic Terns, 1 Arctic Skua and 57 Puffins.

Barra: 2 Sooty Shearwaters, c700 Manx Shearwaters, 11 Storm Petrels, 5 Arctic Terns, 3 Great Skuas and 864 Puffins were seen off Vatersay in a 2 hour watch this afternoon.

 

1st August:

North Uist: Around 100 Black-tailed Godwits flew south over Balranald early afternoon.

South Uist: 34 Black-tailed Godwits were in the south-west corner of Loch Bee.

Barra: A Tree Pipit was heard over Caolas, Vatersay in the afternoon.

Insects: A Pinion-streaked Snout, 2 Bordered Grey, 5 Barred Red, 4 Light Emerald, 1 Scotch Annulet and 4 second generation Golden-rod Pugs were trapped at Loch Eynort last night; as well as 1 Gracillaria syringella, Eudonia murana and 2 Eudonia truncicolella.
