2014

31st March:

Lewis: A White Wagtail and Wheatear were in Barvas today. 2 White-billed Divers were off Skigersta today and a juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull was off Port of Ness.

North Uist: A Chiffchaff and 5 Wheatears were at Scolpaig this afternoon.

Benbecula: A drake Scaup is on Coot Loch. 2 Snow Buntings were at Borve Point.

South Uist: A Chiffchaff was in South Glendale.

Insects: A Great Yellow Bumblebee and Garden Bumblebee were seen in Carinish today. Moths trapped last night include red Sword-grass, Red Chestnut, Clouded Drab and plenty of Hebrew Characters.

30th March:

Lewis: A Jack Snipe was at the Butt.

North Uist: 2 drake Scaup are on Loch Sandary and a Black-tailed Godwit is on Loch Paible. The Pied-billed Grebe is still on Loch nam Feithean along with a pair of Pintail and 2 drake Gadwall. A Greenland White-fronted Goose was by Loch Grogarry and a Tundra Bean Goose was near the campsite at Balranald. Also at Balranald 3 juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gulls, a Jack Snipe and a Chiffchaff were near the visitor centre. 30 Whooper Swans flew north over Balranald early evening.

South Uist: The Wood Duck was still on Loch a Mhuillin this morning. A Chiffchaff was in Bornish and a White Wagtail was at Ardvule.

29th March:

Lewis: 12 Whooper Swans were seen flying north over Loch Seaforth today. A White Wagtail was at the Butt.

North Uist: An adult Glaucous Gull and 2 pale-bellied Brent Geese were between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal today. A Wood Pigeon flew west from Langass this evening and 6 Goldfinch were at Claddach Baleshare this morning. A Tundra Bean Goose, White-fronted Goose and male Wheatear are at Balranald this afternoon.

28th March:

Lewis: A Greenland White-fronted Goose was at Loch Branahuie today. 3 Lapland Buntings, a Snow Bunting and a Wheatear were at the Butt today. A juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull was at Port of Ness.

North Uist: 2 juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gulls, 4 Wheatears (2 male and 2 females) and 2 Snow Buntings were at Aird an Runair today. 3 Glaucous Gulls (2 adults and a juvenile / 1st winter), a juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull and 2 pale-bellied Brent Geese were between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal. 2 drake Scaup are on Loch Sandary. A white Gyr Falcon was reported from around the visitor centre at Balranald today.

South Uist: The drake Wood Duck was seen on Loch a' Mhuilinn, Stoneybridge this afternoon.

Insects: Moths trapped last night include 2 Hebrew Characters at Loch Sandary, 18 at Leurbost and 8 at Carinish, plus a Red Chestnut.

27th March:

North Uist: A Wheatear was at Scotvein, Grimsay this morning and one was at Carinish this afternoon. An Iceland Gull, Slavonian Grebe, 5 Pintail and 2 Wheatears were at Balranald today. The female Ring-necked Duck was back on Loch Scaraidh. 2 drake Scaup are on Loch Sandary.

South Uist: A drake Wood Duck!! is on Loch a Mhuilinn, Stoneybridge. A Tundra Bean Goose was with Greylags at West Loch Ollay. 2 Barnacle Geese flew north off Peninerine this morning followed by 13 north off Stoneybridge. A juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull was at Peninerine. A Chiffchaff was at North Loch Eynort. A juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull was at the south-west end of Loch Bee this morning.

Insects: 10 Hebrew Characters were trapped in Leurbost last night.

26th March:

North Uist: 18 Whooper Swans flew north-west over Carinish early this evening.

Insects: A Small Tortoiseshell was in Carinish this afternoon.

25th March:

North Uist: 2 adult Glaucous Gulls, an adult Iceland Gull and 2 pale-bellied Brent Geese were between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal this morning. A Greenland White-fronted Goose was by Loch Grogarry.

Insects: Belted Beauty moths were seen at Kyles Paible and Balranald today.

24th March:

Lewis: 30 Whooper Swans flew north over Eoropie beach this morning. 6 Snow Buntings were near the Butt. A juvenile Glaucous Gull and juvenile Iceland Gull were on the machair by Loch Stiapabhat and 542 Golden Plover were nearby at Eoropie.

North Uist: A lone White-fronted Goose flew north-west off Baleshare this morning; also 8 Gadwall were on the island.

Benbecula: A drake Scaup is on Coot Loch.

23rd March:

Lewis: The adult Iceland Gull was at the Butt again this morning.

North Uist: The Pied-billed Grebe is still on Loch nam Feithean along with 6 Pintail (3 pairs) and 5 Gadwall (4 males and a female). A Greenland White-fronted Goose was by Loch Grogarry. The 3rd winter Kumlien's Gull and a juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull were at Aird an Runair. The female Ring-necked Duck, 2 drake Scaup and 40 Whooper Swans were on Loch Sandary this morning.

22nd March:

Lewis: An adult Iceland Gull was at the Butt and a juvenile / 1st winter was was on the machair by Loch Stiapabhat.

South Uist: 330 Whooper Swans in the Kildonan / Bornish area today. A Lapland Bunting and drake Pintail were on Bornish machair.

20th March:

North Uist: 14 Whooper Swans were resting on the North Ford, just west of the causeway this evening. A 3rd winter Kumlien's Gull was at Balranald.

South Uist: A sea-watch from Ardvule this morning (0755 - 1010) produced the following heading south: 1 Manx Shearwater, 10 Fulmars, 61 Gannets, 11 Long-tailed Duck, 4 Black Guillemots, 1 Guillemot, 2 Razorbills and 7 Kittiwakes.

19th March:

Benbecula: A juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull was in Stinky Bay.

18th March:

Lewis: 19 Whooper Swans were on the machair behind the Decca Station in Lionel today. The juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull is still at Fivepenny and a Chiffchaff was in Port of Ness.

North Uist: The Pied-billed Grebe is still on Loch nam Feithean. An adult Glaucous Gull and juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull were at Balranald. 2 drake Scaup are on Loch Sandary and the female Ring-necked Duck was reported from here. 2 juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gulls and an adult Iceland Gull were between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal. A Little Egret was on the North Ford yesterday. a Wheatear was seen at Scotvein, Grimsay and a flock of Pink-footed Geese flew north over there early morning.

South Uist: 23 White-fronted Geese were at Kilpheder today and 30 Whooper Swans were on Bornish machair.

16th March:

Lewis: An adult Iceland Gull was off the Butt.

North Uist: 4 Glaucous Gulls (2 adults and 2 juveniles / 1st winters), an adult Iceland Gull and 2 pale-bellied Brent Geese were between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal.

South Uist: A juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull was on the Howmore River this afternoon. The Mistle Thrush is still in South Glendale.

15th March:

Lewis: A juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull was on the machair at Fivepenny.

Benbecula: 2 Black-tailed Godwits and a drake Scaup are on Coot Loch. A juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull was at Borve Point.

South Uist: The Mistle Thrush is still in South Glendale.

14th March:

Lewis: An adult and juvenile Iceland Gull and 2 juvenile Glaucous Gulls were in Stornoway harbour today.

Benbecula: 2 Tundra Bean Geese, a drake Scaup and 2 Black-tailed Godwits are at Coot Loch.

South Uist: A juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull was at Ardivachar this morning. 2 juvenile Glaucous Gulls were at Ardvule and a drake Scaup was on Loch Bornish. A Mistle Thrush was in South Glendale this afternoon.

13th March:

Lewis: 4 Iceland Gulls were in Stornoway harbour. 31 Bramblings were in Willow Glen, Stornoway.3 Bean Geese (a Taiga and 2 Tundra) were at Steinish again today.

Benbecula: 2 Black-tailed Godwits and a drake Scaup were on Coot Loch today.

South Uist: A juvenile Glaucous Gull was at Smerclate.

Insects: 7 Belted Beauties (2 females and 5 males) were seen at Smerclate today.

12th March:

Lewis: 3 Bean Geese (a Taiga and 2 Tundra) were at Steinish today.

North Uist: An adult Glaucous Gull and juvenile Iceland Gull were at Balranald this morning. The female Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Scaraidh. 2 drake Scaup are on Loch Sandary.

South Uist: The male American Wigeon and a drake Scaup were on Loch Bornish whilst an adult Glaucous Gull and 2 Lapland Buntings were nearby.

11th March:

North Uist: The Pied-billed Grebe was seen again today on Loch nam Feithean. The 3rd yr Kumlien's Gull, 2 Glaucous Gulls (an adult and juvenile / 1st winter) and 4 Iceland Gulls (including an adult) were at Balranald.The female Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Scaraidh.

Benbecula: A Black-tailed Godwit and drake Scaup are at Coot Loch.

South Uist: A Siskin was in South Glendale today. 47 Whooper Swans were in Askernish this morning.

Insects: A Hebrew Character was trapped in South Glendale last night.

10th March:

Lewis: 15 Whooper Swans had gathered at Loch Grunavat, Leurbost this evening. A juvenile Kumlien's Gull and 4 Iceland Gulls were in Stornoway harbour this afternoon.

North Uist: The Pied-billed Grebe and the Marsh Sandpiper were seen at Loch nam Feithean today along with 6 Pintail and a drake Gadwall. The female Ring-necked Duck is on Loch Scaraidh. Two flocks of 25 and 40 Whooper Swans were seen over Hougharry this morning. 50 Whooper Swans flew over Baleshare this evening.

9th March:

Lewis: A 2nd cal yr. Iceland Gull and a 2nd cal yr. Kumlien's Gull were near Stornoway coastguard this afternoon.

North Uist: 2 juvenile Glaucous Gulls and 3 pale-bellied Brent Geese are at Rubh' Arnal. 2 drake Scaup are on Loch Sandary. The Pied-billed Grebe was still on Loch nam Feithean today and the Marsh Sandpiper was apparently seen at the west end of the loch before flying east; 2 pairs of Pintail are still present too. A juvenile Iceland Gull, juvenile Kumlien's Gull and 4 Glaucous Gulls ( 2 adults and 2 juveniles) were seen at Balranald today. The female Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Scaraidh.

South Uist: The drake American Wigeon was on Loch Bornish again today. A juvenile Glaucous Gull was at Ardivachar.

8th March:

Benbecula: A drake Scaup is on Coot Loch.

7th March:

North Uist: 8 Glaucous Gulls (2 adults and 6 juveniles), a juvenile Iceland Gull, 3rd winter Kumlien's Gull and 26 Snow Buntings were at Balranald this morning.

6th March:

North Uist: The Pied-billed Grebe is still on Loch nam Feithean. The female Ring-necked Duck is on Loch Scaraidh and a Greenland White-fronted Goose flew over. At least 10 Glaucous Gulls (4 adults and 6+ juveniles), 2 juvenile Iceland Gulls and 3 Kumlien's Gulls (an adult, 3rd winter and pale juvenile) were at Balranald. 2 drake Scaup and a Greenland White-fronted Goose were at Loch Sandary. 5 Glaucous Gulls (3 adults and 2 juveniles), 2 Iceland Gulls (an adult and a juvenile) and 3 pale-bellied Brent Geese were between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal.

South Uist: A male and female Scaup were on Loch Bee.

5th March:

Benbecula: A drake Scaup is on Coot Loch along with 15 Shoveler.

South Uist: The drake American Wigeon is on Loch Bornish and an adult Glaucous Gull was on the machair there.

4th March:

Lewis: 10 Fieldfare and an immature Iceland Gull were at Laxdale. An immature Iceland Gull was also at Portnaguran.

North Uist: The Pied-billed Grebe is still on Loch nam Feithean along with 4 Pintail ( 2 pairs) and a Greenland White-fronted Goose. The female Ring-necked Duck is on Loch Scaraidh. At least 9 Glaucous Gulls (3 adults and 6 juveniles) 4 Iceland Gulls (2 adults and 2 juveniles) and the 3rd winter Kumlien's Gull are at Balranald. 14 Goldfinch were on Baleshare.

South Uist: 23 Greenland White-fronted Geese were at Kilpheder. 4 juvenile Glaucous Gulls were at Askernish along with a Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Marine sightings: A dead Common Dolphin was found on the beach near Kyles Paible.

3rd March:

North Uist: Around 90 Snow Buntings are still on Borve machair, Berneray and 23 Common Scoters, plus 3 Black-throated Divers were off the west side. The Marsh Sandpiper was reported from Loch nam Feithean today. The female Ring-necked Duck was on Loch Scaraidh. 3 Glaucous Gulls (an adult and 2 juveniles), 2 juvenile Iceland Gulls and an adult and 3rd winter Kumlien's Gull were at Balranald along with a Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Benbecula: 82 Long-tailed Ducks were in Stinky Bay today.

South Uist: 2 juvenile Glaucous Gulls were at Ardivachar and 60 Long-tailed Ducks were off Peninerine.

2nd March:

Lewis: 3 Tundra Bean Geese were with Greylags at Steinish today and a 2nd cal.yr Iceland Gull was at Cross Street.

Benbecula: A drake Scaup is on Coot Loch.

1st March:

South Uist: The drake American Wigeon was on Loch Bornish again today. 2 juvenile Glaucous Gulls were on the range. Two adults and a juvenile Glaucous Gull was along the Howmore River
