2014

30th January:

North Uist: A Tundra Bean Goose was seen at Borve, Berneray today.

South Uist: The 3 Tundra Bean Geese were at Peninerine again today and the 1st winter female Surf Scoter was off Drimsdale. The female Lesser Scaup was at the south-west end of Loch Bee although distant. 7 Glaucous Gulls (3 adults and 4 juveniles) were at Kildonan today.

29th January:

North Uist: A Little Auk and 33 Common Scoters were off the west side of Berneray this morning. Another 5 Common Scoters were to the north of the island and 300 Snow Buntings were on the island (200 at Borve and another 100 flew in from Grenitote direction). 3 Fieldfare were on the edge of Lochmaddy. 3 Pintail (2 males and a female); a Kumlien's Gull and an adult Glaucous Gull were seen at Loch nam Feithean today.

South Uist: 3 Tundra Bean Geese were at Peninerine this morning and 2 juvenile Glaucous Gulls were on the shore here. The 1st winter, female Surf Scoter was off the Howmore River mouth. 10 Glaucous Gulls (an adult and 9 juveniles), a juvenile Iceland Gull and juvenile Kumlien's Gull were at Kildonan.

28th January:

North Uist: 2 juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gulls, a 2nd winter and juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull were on the beach at Aird an Runair this morning. 30+ Snow Buntings were at Balranald. An adult and juvenile Glaucous Gull were at Hougharry. A juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull was at Bayhead.

South Uist: The Waxwing was still at Carnan this morning along with a Blackcap and a Water Rail. The 2 Snow Geese were at Garrynamonie again today and a juvenile Iceland Gull flew north. 2 juvenile Glaucous Gulls and 24 Greenland White-fronted Geese are at Askernish.

27th January:

North Uist: A juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull was on the beach at Baleshare this afternoon and a Grey Phalarope was on a flood pool nearby.

South Uist: A Waxwing was at Carnan today. 11 Glaucous Gulls (2 adults and 9 juvenile / 1st winters) and a juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull were at Kildonan today.

26th January:

Lewis: 2 juvenile Iceland Gulls and a juvenile Glaucous Gull were in Stornoway Harbour today.

South Uist: A sea-watch from Ardule (1.25 hours) this morning produced 8 Gannets, 16 Long-tailed Ducks, 4 Kittiwakes, a Great Skua, a Black Guillemot, 7 Razorbills and 2 Guillemots heading south. The Lapland Bunting was on Bornish machair. The 2 Snow Geese were on the machair at Garrynamonie. A juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull was at Ardivachar.

25th January:

Lewis: A Goldfinch was reported from Breanish today.

Harris: 2 Little Grebe were seen in the south harbour at Scalpay today (although common in the southern isles there are very few records from Harris).

North Uist: 25 Goldfinch were behind the visitor centre at Balranald today. A lone Snow Bunting was on Baleshare. 5 juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gulls and a juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull were seen around Balranald today.

Benbecula: 2 immature / female Common Scoters were off Balivanich this morning and a juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull was at Borve Point.

South Uist: An adult Glaucous Gull, 21 Kittiwakes and 15 Gannets flew south at Ardvule this morning. 2 pale-bellied Brent Geese flew north at Ardvule around mid-day and a Lapland Bunting was on Bornish machair along with 10 Snow Buntings. The 2 Snow Geese were on the machair at Garrynamonie again today. 2 Water Rails are at Bornish.

23rd January:

North Uist: 2 juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gulls are at Aird an Runair and a 1st winter Iceland Gull was on the machair at Balranald. 2 juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gulls were also at Hougharry. A juvenile / 1st winter Iceland Gull and a 3rd winter Kumlien's Gull were just north of Bayhead.

South Uist: A Tree Sparrow is on Eriskay, close to Am Politician. The 2 Snow Geese were at Garrynamonie again today. 54 Kittiwakes, 11 Razorbill, 21 Guillemots and 2 Fulmars flew south off Ardvule this morning. 33 Snow Buntings were on Bornish machair.

22nd January:

North Uist: The Pied-billed Grebe was on Loch nam Feithean along with a pair of Pintail, a pair of Gadwall and 8 Shoveler. 2 juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gulls were at Aird an Runair. Around 60 Snow Buntings were at Balranald. A juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull was at Hougharry. 4 pale-bellied Brent Geese were at Rubh' Arnal.

South Uist: The 1st winter Surf Scoter was off Peninerine today with around 60 Long-tailed Ducks. The female Lesser Scaup was at the south-west end of Loch Bee. A 1st winter Grey Phalarope was at Ardivachar.

21st January:

Lewis: A dead Jack Snipe was found on the road by the Decca Station, Lionel this morning.

South Uist: 6 juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gulls were on the whale at Kildonan today. An adult Iceland Gull was at Ardvule with 27 Gannets south and 17 Snow Buntings on Bornish machair.

20th January:

South Uist: The 1st winter Surf Scoter was off Peninerine again today although it did move to the Drimsdale side of the Howmore River. The female Lesser Scaup is at the south-west end of Loch Bee and 142 Greenland White-fronted Geese were on the west side of the loch. 22 Greenland White-fronted Geese were also by Loch Hallan.

19th January:

Lewis: An adult and 3 juvenile Iceland Gulls were in Stornoway harbour today.

North Uist: The Marsh Sandpiper was on the tidal area between Kyles Paible and Bayhead this morning. 2 juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gulls, an adult Iceland Gull, 4 pale-bellied Brent Geese and a Snow Bunting are between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal. 2 drake Scaup are still on Loch Sandary. A 2nd winter Glaucous Gull was at Loch Grogarry before flying south. 2 juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gulls were at Hougharry and 2 Greenland White-fronted Geese are by Loch nam Feithean.

South Uist: The Grey Phalarope and 1st winter Surf Scoter are at Peninerine plus 112 Long-tailed Ducks and 2 Slavonian grebe were off-shore here. A further 12 Long-tailed Ducks and a Slavonian Grebe were off Stoneybridge.

18th January:

North Uist: A drake Pintail was on Loch nam Feithean.

South Uist: The Grey Phalarope and a 1st winter Surf Scoter were at Peninerine today; plus 72 Long-tailed Ducks and a Slavonian Grebe off-shore there. The female Lesser Scaup was at the south-west end of Loch Bee. A Lapland Bunting was with 8 Snow Buntings on Bornish machair. The 2 Snow Geese are still on Loch an Eilean, Garrynamonie.

17th January:

South Uist: The 2 Snow Geese were at Smerclate this morning before heading off to Loch an Eilean, Garrynamonie. 7 Glaucous Gulls (2nd winter, an adult and 5 juveniles / 1st winter) were at Kildonan along with 12 Snow Buntings. A Grey Phalarope was feeding on the sea just south of the Howmore River mouth.

16th January:

South Uist: The 2 Greater Snow Geese are on Loch an Eilean at Garrynamonie today. 5 Glaucous Gull (juveniles / 1st winters) were at Kildonan.

14th January:

North Uist: The Marsh Sandpiper was seen on the flood pools between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal today along with a juvenile Iceland Gull, 3 juvenile Glaucous Gulls, 3 pale-bellied Brent Geese and 20+ Snow Buntings.

South Uist: The female Lesser Scaup is at the south-west end of Loch Bee although distant. 2 Snow Geese were reported from Boisdale this afternoon although they are mobile and last seen heading towards Smerclate. One of the birds has a metal ring on its right leg. 7 Snow Buntings were near Orosay. A 1st winter Iceland Gull was at Smerclate and 6 Glaucous Gulls were seen on the dead Sperm Whale at Kildonan.

13th January:

North Uist: 2 hybrid Canada x Barnacle Geese were at Malaclate this morning. A juvenile Glaucous Gull was at Hougharry. 2 drake Scaup were on Loch Sandary. A juvenile Glaucous Gull was Balemore and another was over Bayhead. The Marsh Sandpiper was on the shore at Kyles Paible / Bayhead. 2 juvenile Glaucous Gulls were on Baleshare beach today.

South Uist: A 1st winter Iceland Gull and 5 Glaucous Gulls (an adult, 3 juveniles and a 2nd winter) are at Askernish.

12th January:

Lewis: 2 juvenile Iceland Gulls were in Stornoway harbour this afternoon.

South Uist: 4 Glaucous Gulls (an adult, 2 x 1st winter and a 2nd winter) were around Bornish / Ardvule.

11th January:

Lewis: A Glossy Ibis was just to the north-east of Loch Stiapabhat and a juvenile Glaucous Gull was at Eoropie.

North Uist: 2 Richardson's Canada Geese were with 600+ Barnacle Geese at Middlequarter around mid-day before flying off east. A 2nd yr Glaucous Gull was at Loch na Reivil, Hougharry and 2 x 3rd yr birds were on the sea. There was also a mixed flock of Snow Buntings and Sylarks at Borve, Berneray.

Benbecula: An adult Glaucous Gull was at Stinky Bay this morning before drifting south.

South Uist: The female Lesser Scaup is at the south-west end of Loch Bee. 2 Glossy Ibis are at An Liana Moire, between Daliburgh and Kilpheder. 22 Greenland White-fronted Geese were by Loch Hallan. 82 Whooper Swans were on Bornish machair and a 1st winter Iceland Gull was on Loch Bornish.

10th January:

Lewis: An adult Glaucous Gull was on Stornoway tip today and a 1st yr Iceland Gull was in Stornoway harbour. 7 Snow Buntings were around 700m south of Loch Soval.

North Uist: The Glossy Ibis was by the old church at Balranald again this morning. A juvenile Glaucous Gull followed the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry for several miles before turning back early afternoon. The Marsh Sandpiper was seen again today on the shore at Kyles Paible.

Benbecula: A drake Green-winged Teal is on Coot Loch.

South Uist: A Glossy Ibis is at Carnan about 300m along the un-surfaced track leading from Carnan Stores to Hebridean Jewellery. The 2 Glossy Ibis are also still in the Daliburgh area. A Lapland Bunting is amongst Skylarks on Bornish machair. A juvenile Glaucous Gull was on the shore at Askernish and 22 Greenland White-fronted Geese were by Loch Hallan. An adult Glaucous Gull was at Loch Ardvule.

9th January:

North Uist: The Marsh Sandpiper was seen along the shore at Kyles Paible again today. Also between there at Rubh' Arnal, 7 Glaucous Gulls (5 x juv. / 1st winter, a 2nd winter and an adult), 4 Iceland Gulls (3 x juv. / 1st winter and an adult) plus a 3rd winter Kumlien's Gull. 30 Goldfinch were at Rubh' Arnal and at least 10 were at Carinish along with a Fieldfare this morning. A 1st and a 2nd winter Glaucous Gull were at Hougharry. The Glossy Ibis was seen this morning by the old church at Balranald.

8th January:

Lewis: The Glossy Ibis is still at North Galson today.

North Uist: An immature Glaucous Gull flew south-east along Baleshare beach this morning. 2 juv. / 1st winter, 2 x 2nd winter and an adult Glaucous Gull; 2 x juv. / 1st winter and an adult Iceland Gull plus 30 Goldfinch are between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal. 300 - 350 Snow Buntings and 250 Twite are on Grenitote machair.

South Uist: The female Lesser Scaup was seen on Loch Bee today.

7th January:

North Uist: 3 x juv. / 1st winter and an adult Iceland Gull, 2nd winter Glaucous Gull, adult and juv. / 1st winter Kittiwake were between Kyles Paible - Rubh' Arnal. 4 Snow Buntings flew north at Balemore. 2 immatuure drake Scaup are on Loch Sandary whilst a juv. / 1st winter Iceland Gull flew south-west over the north end around mid-day.

South Uist: 7 Snow Buntings were on the beach at Askernish this morning. An adult Glaucous Gull was at Loch Eilean an Staoir, Frobost. 17 Gannets, 36 Kittiwakes, a Puffin, Razorbill and Guillemot flew south off Ardvule this morning. 74 Long-tailed Ducks were off Peninerine and 35 were off Stoneybridge.

6th January:

Benbecula: 3 Glossy Ibis can still be found feeding on the flooded ground behind Ronnies Hardware shop to the south of Balivanich.

South Uist: A Little Auk and 24 Gannets flew south at Ardvule today. 26 Snow Buntings were on the machair and up to 41 Whooper Swans were in the area.

5th January:

North Uist: 2 x 1st winter Glaucous Gulls were on Baleshare beach; also 2 immature Gannets off-shore there this afternoon.

Benbecula: A Little Auk was found sheltering under a car in Balivanich and has been taken into care. The 3 Glossy Ibis are still just south of Balivanich near Ronnies Hardware shop.

4th January:

North Uist: A Common Redpoll was at Carinish this morning. The Marsh Sandpiper was seen at Kyles Paible on the edge of the tide with Redshank today. 2 Greenland White-fronted Geese were at Loch Scaraidh. 25 Slavonian Grebe were off Berneray. 90 Snow Buntings were on Borve machair, Berneray and the Glossy Ibis was by the community hall there.

Benbecula: The 3 Glossy Ibis were just south of Balivanich behind Ronnies again today.

South Uist: The 1st winter Glaucous Gull is still at Ardvule whilst a Little Auk and 10 Gannets flew south there this morning. The Glossy Ibis is on Kilaulay machair. 32+ Snow Buntings are on Drimsdale machair.

3rd January:

Benbecula: The 3 Glossy Ibis are still on the flood on the south side of Balivanich near Ronnies. A 1st winter Glaucous Gull was in Stinky Bay.

South Uist: A juvenile Glaucous Gull was at Ardvule whilst 21 Snow Buntings and a Lapland Bunting were on Bornish machair.

2nd January:

Lewis: The Glossy Ibis is still at North Galson.

North Uist: A Glossy Ibis was seen near the village hall at Borve, Berneray today. 3 x 1st winter Glaucous Gulls, a 1st winter and adult Iceland Gull, 11 Snow Buntings and 4 pale-bellied Brent Geese were between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal this afternoon. The Marsh Sandpiper was also present early afternoon before being flushed off along the shore. The Pied-billed Grebe was on Loch Scaraidh. 2 Greenland White-fronted Geese were at Loch nam Feithean. 2 Scaup and a Kittiwake were on Loch Sandary. A flock of Snow Buntings were seen on the Udal today.

Benbecula: 3 Glossy Ibis were on the flood behind Ronnies' just south of Balivanich again today.

1st January:

Lewis: The Glossy Ibis is still at North Galson. Juvenile Iceland Gulls were at the Butt and Stornoway harbour. A drake Pintail was on Loch Branahuie yesterday.

North Uist: The Marsh Sandpiper was again on flood pools between Kyles Paible and Rubh' Arnal; also 2 x 1st winter, plus a 2nd winter Glaucous Gull and a 1st winter and adult Iceland Gull were in the area as well as 5 pale-bellied Brent Geese and 10 Snow Buntings. The Pied-billed Grebe was on Loch nam Feithean along with a drake Pintail. 2 immature drake Scaup are on Loch Sandary. The Glossy Ibis was seen near the old church near Balranald visitor centre.

Benbecula: 3 Glossy Ibis were seen on the flood just south of Balivanich (behind Ronnies Harware Shop).

South Uist: The Glossy Ibis is still on Kilaulay machair. A Lapland Bunting and 40 Snow Buntings were on the machair at Bornish. 4 pale-bellied Brent Geese were on the South Ford.
