31st August:

Lewis: A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was near the lighthouse at the Butt this morning.

North Uist: 4 Sooty Shearwaters and 4 Common Scoters flew south at Griminish Point during a couple of hours seawatching this morning. 15 Sooty Shearwaters were seen off Aird an Runair. A Turtle Dove and Buff-breasted Sandpiper were also seen at Balranald. A Western Sandpiper was on the shore at Aird an Runair today.

South Uist: At Ardvule this morning a southerly passage of 2 Red-throated Divers, 1 Great Northern Diver, 1280 Gannets, 47 Fulmars, 91 Sooty Shearwaters, 1026 Manx Shearwaters, 5 Great Skuas, 1 Arctic Skua, 1 Arctic Tern, 8 Razorbills, 1 Black Guillemot, 10 Common Scoter, 1 Whimbrel, 36 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff while a Curlew Sandpiper was in the south bay.

30th August:

North Uist: A juvenile Curlew Sandpiper was on Baleshare this morning.

Benbecula: The Common Crane was at Loch Mor again today.

South Uist: Southerly passage at Ardvule this morning included 3 Red-throated Divers, 915 Gannets, 52 Fulmars, 10 Sooty Shearwaters, 634 Manx Shearwaters, 1 Storm Petrel, 2 Arctic Terns, 1 Great Skua (and one north) and 17 Razorbills. Also 3 Curlew Sandpiper in the south bay. 

 

29th August:

Lewis: A Sooty Shearwater flew past the Butt in the afternoon whilst 15 Wigeon headed south-eastwards and 3 Swifts flew past.

Barra: 5 Sooty Shearwaters past Brevig this afternoon. A Whitethroat was also at Bervig.

Insects: At North Loch Eynort 111 moths of 19 species were caught last night including 2 Barred Red, 1 Pine Carpet, 1 Small Autumnal Moth, 12 Pink-barred Sallow, 5 Barred Chestnut, 23 Heath Rustic and 4 Neglected Rustic. In South Glendale 325 moths / 26 species were trapped including 1 Dark Marbled Carpet, 1 Narrow-winged Pug, 1 Northern Rustic, 1 Hedge Rustic, 16 Rosy Rustic, 6 Northern Deep-brown Darts, 7 Neglected Rustic, 132 Ear Moths agg. and 36 Autumnal Rustic. A Painted Lady was on Vatersay.

Marine Sightings: 20 Bottle-nosed Dolphins were off the Butt of Lewis.

28th August:

Lewis: 15 Black-tailed Godwits and 8 Ruff were at Loch Stiabhat.

South Uist: A juvenile Ruff and Black-tailed Godwit were between Stoneybridge and Peninerine.

Insects: A Painted Lady was at Stoneybridge and another at Carnan.

27th August:

South Uist: A juvenile Little Stint, at least 5 Curlew Sandpipers and 4 Black-tailed Godwits were at Stoneybridge. A juvenile Little Stint, 8 Curlew Sandpipers and 2 Ruff were on the south beach at Bornish today.

Insects: Moth trapping on Daliburgh machair produced 589 moths of 22 species including 309 Ear Moth agg., 187 Flounced Rustic, 22 Autumnal Rustic, 22 Northern Deep-brown Dart, 1 Mouse Moth, 1 Archer's Dart and micro moth Agonopterix kaekeritziana, Cochylis atricapitana and Crambus perlella. In South Glendale 297 moths and 33 species pf moth were caught including 81 Ear Moths agg., 78 Square-spot Rustic, 39 Autumnal Rustic, 8 Northern Deep-brown Dart, 8 Neglected Rustic, 6 Heath Rustic, 2 Mouse Moth and micro moths Epinotia caprana, Eana penziana, 2 Eudonia truncicolella and Eudonia murana.

26th August:

North Uist: At least 7 Curlew Sandpipers were on Baleshare along with a Black-tailed Godwit, a Whimbrel and 105 Grey Plover. 28 Grey Plover were at Grenitote today.

Benbecula: The juvenile Little Stint and Curlew Sandpiper were on the airport beach, Balivanich today.

South Uist: Birds passing Ardvule this morning included 8 Red-throated Divers, 1 Great Northern Diver, 1 Common Scoter, 2,033 Gannets, 942 Manx Shearwaters, 4 Sooty Shearwaters, 113 Fulmars, 3 Storm Petrels, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Common Tern, 9 Arctic Terns, 1 Little Gull juv, 45 Kittiwakes and 2 Black Guillemots. Also 7 Curlew Sandpipers in the south bay.

Marine Sightings: Some time last week a Leatherback Turtle was seen between Uist and the Monachs. A small pod of Risso's Dolphins were seen off the Maddies today.

25th August:

Lewis: 2 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers were at Loch Ordais. 11 Swifts were at the Butt.

Benbecula: A juvenile Curlew Sandpiper was at Borve Point and at least 50 Black-tailed Godwits were on the machair nearby. At least 2 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers and a juvenile Little Stint were on the airport beach in Balivanich.

South Uist: 48 Black-tailed Godwits were at Kilpheder.

Barra: 2 Pied Flycatchers were at Brevig today.

Insects: A Hummingbird Hawkmoth was seen on Boisdale machair.

24th August:

Lewis: 3 Leach's Petrels, 95 Storm Petrels and 9 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the ferry between Ullapool and Stornoway. A Ruff and 4 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Stiapabhat. 10 Swifts were at the Butt.

Benbecula: 3 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers and the juvenile Little Stint are on the airport beach in Balivanich.

Insects: 219 moths of 28 species were caught in South Glendale last night including a Sallow, 5 Neglected Rustic, 2 Northern Deep-brown Darts and 1 Mouse Moth.

Marine Sightings: 10 Minke Whales were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry today. 20 Bottle-nosed Dolphins were seen off Port of Ness in the afternoon before heading north.

23rd August:

Lewis: 2 Swifts were at the Butt of Lewis and a Sooty Shearwater flew past.

North Uist: 2 juvenile Ruff were near Loch Sandary and 3 Black-tailed Godwits flew south over Loch Paible. 14 Curlew Sandpipers were on Baleshare today.

Benbecula: A juvenile Little Stint and a juvenile Curlew Sandpiper were on the airport beach in Balivanich today.

Barra: 8 Sooty Shearwaters, c1100 Manx Shearwaters, 100 Kittiwakes (mostly juvs), 8 Great Skuas and a Great Northern Diver flew south past Brevig in 90 minutes around lunchtime.

Insects: A Painted Lady was by Loch Paibe and another was at Rubh Arnal. 295 moths of 40 species were caught in South Glendale including Pink-barred Sallow, Heath Rustic, 40 Autumnal Rustic, 2 Striped Twin-spot Carpet, 1 Chestnut-coloured Carpet, Epinotia trigonella (a first for the Outer Hebrides), 4 Epinotia caprana, 1 Cnephasia conspersana and1 Eudonia angustea.

22nd August:

Benbecula: 30 Black-tailed Godwits were on the machair south-west of Coot Loch with another 20 at Coot Loch. The Common Crane was back at Loch Mor this afternoon.

South Uist: 603 Gannets, 116 Manx Shearwaters, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 1 Arctic Tern and a Great Skua flew south at Ardvule this morning (0615-1000).

Insects: At least 3 Red Admirals were at North Loch Eynort today.

 

21st August:

Lewis: 4 Ruff and 14 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Stiapabhat.

North Uist: 6 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers and 39 Black-tailed Godwits were on Baleshare this morning.

Benbecula: The Common Crane was at Loch Mor this afternoon. 24 Black-tailed Godwits flew north at Balivanich and 24 were also oar Coot Loch this morning.

South Uist: The Wood Sandpiper was still at the west end of West Loch Ollay. A southerly movement at Ardvule this morning in near calm conditions included 102 Manx Shearwater, 10 Sooty Shearwaters, 7 Storm Petrels, 1 Great Skua whilst 59 Fulmars flew north. Also present were 14 Black-tailed Godwits, 1 Ruff and 1 Curlew Sandpiper.

Insects: A Hummingbird Hawkmoth flew past the summit of Ben Sciathan, Eriskay this afternoon and 5 Graylings were also seen.

Marine Sightings: 2 Harbour Porpoise were off Ardvule this morning.

20th August:

Lewis: 30 Black-tailed Godwits flew south over Port of Ness and a juvenile Hen Harrier was around Loch Stiapabhat.

South Uist: The Semipalmated Sandpiper, a juvenile Curlew Sandpiper and a Common Sandpiper were at Balgarva this morning. 4 Curlew Sandpipers were at Ardivachar and another 9 were just south of there. 12 Black-tailed Godwits were at north Loch Bee before flying south-west. 78 Black-tailed godwits and 4 Ruff were at Kilpheder. A juvenile Wood Sandpiper was at the west end of West Loch Ollay this evening. 17 Black-tailed Godwits and 4 Ruff were between Ormiclate and Bornish machair. 6 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers were at Peninerine. An adult Curlew Sandpiper was at Frobost whilst 3 juveniles were at Daliburgh and 4 were at Orosay.

Insects: Red Admirals were at Ardkenneth, Howmore and Kilpheder, South Uist with a Dark Green Fritillary at Howmore too.

19th August:

Lewis: 5 Sooty Shearwaters, a Leach's Petrel, 4 Storm Petrels and 40 Knot (heading south) were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry today.

South Uist: The Semipalmated Sandpiper was showing well along the west side of the Gualan, off Balgarva.

Marine Sightings: 10 Common Dolphins were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry just off Lewis.

 

18th August:

North Uist: An adult Spotted Redshank was seen on the shore near the Lobster Pot Tearoom on Berneray.

Benbecula: The Common Crane flew over Loch Fada, heading towards the north. A 2nd yr Iceland Gull, 4 Black-tailed Godwits and a Whimbrel were near Borve Point.

South Uist: A juvenile Semipalmated Sandpiper was on the shore at Balgarva this morning.

Insects: A Painted Lady, Red Admiral and Dark Green Fritillary were seen in Torlum today.

17th August:

North Uist: A juvenile Ruff was in fields south of Hougharry today.

South Uist: A Sooty Shearwater flew south at Ardvule this morning. 6 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff were on Bornish machair.

Insects: 333 moths of 49 species were caught in South Glendale including a first for the Outer Hebrides - a Buff Footman. Other moths included a Least Yellow Underwing, Scalloped Oak, 2 Acleris effractana, 5 Epinotia caprana, 1 Eana penziana, 1 Agonopterix yeatiana and 1 Agonopterix kaekeritziana.

16th August:

Lewis: 3 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry late this morning.

South Uist: A juvenile Cuckoo was at Smerclate

Insects: 6 Garden Tigers were seen at Smerclate.

 

14th August:

South Uist: An Osprey was fishing at Loch Bee early this afternoon. Birds flying south at Ardvule this morning included 1 Black-throated Diver, 1 Storm Petrel, 69 Manx Shearwaters, 2 Great Skuas, 10 Arctic Terns and 16 Snipe

Marine Sightings: A single Orca, 4 Risso's Dolphins, around 30 Common Dolphins and 3 Harbour Porpoise were off Vatersay during a two hour watch today. A Minke Whale and 2 Harbour Porpoise were off Brevig, Barra this morning.

Insects: 114 moths of 35 species were caught in South Glendale including 2 Hedge Rustic, 12 Antler Moths, 1 Dark Marbled Carpet, 3 Arran Carpet and 1 Striped Twin-spot Carpet.

13th August:

North Uist: 16 Black-tailed Godwits flew south-west over Balranald this morning. 3 Black-tailed Godwits were on Loch Mor, Baleshare and 20 were in the Vallay area.

South Uist: 2 Great Northern Divers, 1 Red-throated Diver, 52 Manx Shearwaters, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 1 Storm Petrel, 1 Arctic Tern and 1 Great Skua flew south off Ardvule this morning.

12th August:

Benbecula: 3 Black-tailed Godwits were at Torlum.

South Uist: Southerly movement off Ardvule this morning included 761 Gannets, 50 Fulmars, 113 Manx Shearwaters, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 10 Storm Petrels, 7 Arctic Terns, 8 Kittiwakes, 1 Arctic Skua, 1 Great Skua and 6 Whimbrel.

Barra: A Storm Petrel flew south at Brevig.

11th August:

South Uist: 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 4 Storm Petrels, 7 Arctic Terns and a Great Skua flew south at Ardvule this morning.

10th August:

South Uist: Southerly passage at Ardvule this morning included 152 Gannets, 34 Fulmars, 58 Manx Shearwaters, 34 Storm Petrels, 8 Kittiwakes, 5 Arctic Terns, 3 Common Terns, 1 Whimbrel and 1 Black Guillemot while a Great Skua flew north.

8th August:

Lewis: 12 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Branahuie this morning.

Benbecula: A juvenile Ruff was at Loch Mor and 10 Black-tailed Godwits flew over. A juvenile Ruff and a Knot were in Stinky Bay.

7th August:

South Uist: 2 Sooty Shearwaters 1,144 Gannets, 218 Manx Shearwaters, 485 Fulmars, 1 Great Northern Diver, 1 Red-throated Diver, 17 Kittiwakes, 3 Arctic Terns, 4 Great Skuas and 12 Black Guillemots flew south at Ardvule this morning. 26+ Whimbrel were at the south end of Loch Bee.

6th August:

North Uist: 22 Black-tailed Godwits flew south-west over Griminish Pier early this afternoon. Another Black-tailed Godwit was at Loch Sandary and 2 Whimbrel were at Tigharry.

Benbecula: The Common Crane was on Borve machair.

Barra: A Hawfinch was at Morghan today and a Grasshopper Warbler was at Brevig.

Insects: 242 moths/ of 45 species were caught on Eriskay last night including 2 Crinan Ear, 2 Northern Spinach, 15 Scotch Annulet, 1 Barred Rivulet, 5 Northern Rustic, 9 Chevron, 2 Rustic and micros which included Bee Moth, 4 Pyrausta despicata, 9 Cnephasia conspersana and 2 Agonopterix kaekeritziana.

5th August:

Benbecula: A Green Sandpiper was at Creagorry this morning.

Insects: At Druidibeg last night had 148 moths 0f 27 species were trapped including 54 July Highflyers, 17 Small Fan-footed Waves, 1 Golden-rod Pug, 6 Minor Shoulder-knot and micros Epinotia nisella and 10 Eudonia truncicolella.In South Glendale 625 moths of 63 species were caught including 1 Barred Rivulet, 24 Purple Bar, 3 Brimstone Moths, 1 Scotch Annulet, 2 Red Carpet, 6 Scarce Silver Y, 21 Gold Spot, 2 Lempke’s Gold Spot, 1 Haworth’s Minor, 1 Crescent, 1 Hedge Rustic, 1 Pinion-streaked Snout and micros 13 Eudonia pallida, 3 Eudonia murana, 3 Eudonia truncicolella, 14 Catoptria margaritella and an Eana penziana.

4th August:

Benbecula: The Common Crane was still in the Loch Fada area today.

Barra: A Cuckoo and Grey Wagtail were at Brevig and large numbers of Manx Shearwaters were passing offshore with 1,400 an hour around mid-morning.

 

3rd August:

North Uist: A Swift flew south-east over Loch Sandary this afternoon.

2nd August:

Benbecula: 4 Swifts were at Coot Loch this afternoon.

Insects: Trapping at North Loch Eynort last night produced a Riband Wave, Treble-bar, 15 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings, 2 Rosy Rustic, Dark Marbled Carpet, Small Rivulet, Red Carpet, 5 Golden-rod Pugs and micros Gracillaria syringella, Epinotia tenerana and 2 Zeiraphera ratzeburgiana. At South Glendale a Treble-bar, 2 Scarce Silver Y  and micros Scrobipalpa samadensis and Eudonia angustea. were caught.

1st August:

North Uist: A Great Crested Grebe was on Loch Sandary.

Insects: 1,178 moths were caught in Carinish last night with the two commonest species being Dark Arches (411) and Smoky Wainscot (197). A Dark Spinach was also trapped.
