Please note that the sightings below do not reflect the variety of species you can see in a normal day out birding or wildlife watching. These reports concentrate on more unusual species or significant counts or movements.

31st March:

Lewis: A juvenile Glaucous Gull was in Stornoway harbour. 8 Siskins and 2 Great Tits were in Willowglen, Stornoway. The drake Green-winged Teal was on Loch Stiapabhat. 2 Wheatears were at Port Stoth, near the Butt and 16 Whooper Swans, plus 350 grey geese flew north-west past the lighthouse in the morning.

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was seen near the visitor centre at Balranald this morning before returning to Loch na Reivil to feed on the Mute Swan.

South Uist: 2 juvenile Iceland Gulls flew past Smerclate this morning.

Barra: A Pomarine Skua was seen circling a fishing boat 50 miles west of the island on 29th March.

30th March:

Lewis: A Wheatear was at the Butt and flocks of 60 Greylags and 34 Pink-footed Geese flew north-west out to sea there in the afternoon. 200 Redwings were in the field by Loch Stiapabhat hide.

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was in the Hougharry area for much of the day today. A Great White Egret was on Loch nam Feithean along with 3 Pintail. 3 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Grogarry. 2 Wheatears were at Aird an Runair and 55 Greenland White-fronted Geese flew north there around midday. Another Wheatear was at Hougharry. A juvenile Glaucous Gull was by the Balranald visitor centre this morning. A Wheatear was seen at Scotvein, Grimsay this afternoon.

South Uist: 17 Greenland White-fronted Geese, 8 Barnacle Geese and 2 Great Skuas flew north at Ardvule this morning.

Barra: A White-billed Diver was seen again, distantly from Eoligarry pier today.

Marine Sightings: A single Bottle-nosed Dolphin swam south at Ardvule this morning.

29th March:

Lewis: The Hawfinch was seen again in a private garden in Lionel.

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was sat on the hillside above Loch Grogarry again this morning and at Hougharry late this afternoon. A juvenile Glaucous Gull was at Balranald, whilst 8 Whooper Swans and 50+ migrant Greylags flew north-west there. A Green Sandpiper was seen on the North Ford between Grimsay and Claddach Carinish this morning. A Wheatear was along the Loch Portain road.

South Uist: 15 Whooper Swans flew north at Orasay this morning.

Barra: A White-billed Diver was off Eoligarry.

Insects: A male Belted Beauty was seen on Boisdale machair today.

 

28th March:

Lewis: A Hawfinch was at Lionel in the afternoon. 2 Snow Buntings were at the Butt.

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was back on the hillside above Loch Grogarry around midday and feeding by Loch Eaval later in the afternoon. A juvenile Glaucous Gull was at Loch na Reivil.

South Uist: A Chiffchaff and Goldcrest were in South Glendale.

27th March:

Lewis: A juvenile Glaucous Gull was on Loch Barvas and an immature Hen Harrier was nearby. A juvenile Iceland Gull, Great Skua and 4 Snow Buntings were at the Butt. The drake Green-winged Teal was on Loch Stiapabhat.

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was seen this afternoon at Loch Grogarry, near Hougharry. It was perched on a fence for around an hour before chasing off a Peregrine and disappearing high in pursuit. A juvenile Glaucous Gull was by Loch na Reivil.

South Uist: An Iceland Gull was seen at Howmore. A juvenile Iceland Gull was in the south bay at Ardvule and a Great Skua flew north.

26th March:

North Uist: 20 Whooper Swans flew north over Baleshare this morning.

South Uist: 4 Manx Shearwaters, 1 Black-throated Diver, 18 Razorbills and a Black Guillemot flew south at Ardvule this morning whilst a 1st wint Iceland Gull, 1 Great Skua, 1 Common Scoter and 22 Whooper Swans flew north.

Barra: A juvenile Iceland Gull was at Loch Tangusdale and an immature Glaucous Gull was at Allasdale.

25th March:

Lewis: A juvenile Iceland Gull and juvenile Glaucous Gull were in Stornoway harbour today.

South Uist: A Great Skua flew south at Ardvule this morning.

Barra: A 2nd winter Glaucous Gull was at Allasdale.

 

24th March:

Lewis: 2 White-billed Divers were off Skigersta this afternoon. The drake Green-winged Teal is still on Loch Stiapabhat.

North Uist: The drake Green-winged Teal was on Loch Sandary.

South Uist: A juvenile Iceland Gull was at Smerclate.

23rd March:

Lewis: 2 White-billed Divers were off Skigersta.

Barra: A 2nd winter Glaucous Gull was at Allasdale.

 

22nd March:

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was at Aird an Runair this afternoon.

Benbecula: A juvenile Iceland Gull was at Borve Point.

Insects: 2 Dotted Borders and an early Acleris hastiana were trapped in South Glendale last night.

21st March:

North Uist: A Water Rail was "singing" in Carinish during the day today.

 

20th March:

North Uist: 2 Glaucous Gulls (1st and 2nd winter) and 20 Snow Buntings were at Balranald. The Gyr Falcon was seen at Aird an Runair this afternoon.

Marine Sightings: A small pod (at least 3) of Risso's Dolphins were off the south side of the Braighe, near Stornoway in the afternoon.

 

19th March:

Lewis: A White-billed Diver was off Skigersta (13:00 - 13:30).

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was on a fence above Loch Grogarry, near Balranald early this afternoon. 45 Whooper Swans flew north west over Carinish around 9 am. A Wheatear was at Ben Hacklett, Loch Portain.

South Uist: 17 Whooper Swans dropped onto a moorland loch at Loch Carnan this afternoon.

 

18th March:

Lewis: A juvenile Iceland Gull was at the Butt in the morning and the drake Green-winged Teal was on Loch Stiapabhat.

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was seen on fence posts opposite Loch nam Feithean again this morning.

Insects: Moths trapped last night in South Glendale include Dotted Border, Hebrew Characters, Acleris hyemana and Agonopterix yeatiana.

17th March:

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was seen on fence posts opposite Loch nam Feithean early this afternoon and a Green-winged Teal was on the loch. The Gyr Falcon then moved to Hougharry where it spend most of the afternoon. 2 Iceland Gulls were around Paible. 2 drake American Wigeon were near the Loch Portain turning.

Barra: A 2nd winter Glaucous Gull was at Allasdale.

16th March:

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was on the headland at Aird an Runair this morning and a juvenile Glaucous Gull was at the north end. Another juvenile Glaucous Gull was around a dead Pilot Whale near the Balranald visitor centre and a Snow Bunting was on the coast. 4 female Pintails were on Loch nam Feithean. The drake Green-winged Teal was on Loch Sandary.

South Uist: 63 Whooper Swans, 23 Barnacle Geese and 4 Common Scoters flew north at Ardvule this morning and a Black-throated Diver flew south. A Goldcrest and Goldfinch were at Carnan.

Insects: 3 Belted Beauties were seen at Balranald today.

15th March:

Lewis: 2 White-billed Divers were off Port of Ness and one was off Skigersta. The drake Green-winged Teal was on Loch Stiapabhat along with 14 Whooper Swans.

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was showing well this morning between Cnon an Torrain and Balemore where it was finishing off the Greylag it had apparently been feeding on since Sunday. The wintering Little Stint was also on Loch Paible. The drake Green-winged Teal was seen on Loch nam Feithean. The first Wheatear of the spring was seen near Loch Sandary.

14th March:

Lewis: A White-billed Diver was off Skigersta this evening. The drake Green-winged Teal was on Loch Stiapabhat with 3 Greenland White-fronted Geese.

North Uist: The Gyr Falcon was showing well in the Paible area this morning where it was feeding on a dead Greylag Goose. Around 60 Whooper Swans (in two flocks) flew north over Balemore. A 2nd winter Iceland Gull and 13 pale-bellied Brent Geese were near Rubh' Arnal. 40 Whooper Swans were resting on the North Ford off Carinish. 2 drake American Wigeon were near the Lohc Portain turning.

South Uist: 3 Common Scoters, 26 Barnacle Geese and 89 Whooper Swans flew north at Ardvule this morning. 4 Goldcrests are in South Glendale.

Insects: 1 Hebrew Character, 9 Dotted Border, 7 Acleris hyemana and an Agonopterix yeatiana were trapped in South Glendale last night.

Marine Sightings: A Humback Whale was seen from the Lochmaddy - Uig ferry today.

13th March:

North Uist: 13 Whooper Swans and 16 Barnacle Geese flew north-west over Carinish this morning; also a Goldcrest and 6 Fieldfare there. The Coot is still on Loch Sandary.

South Uist: A Mistle Thrush and 2 Goldcrests were in South Glendale whilst 32 Whooper Swans flew over this morning. 2 Iceland Gulls (juvenile and 2nd winter) were bewteen Garrynamonie and Orasay today with 2 Pied Wagtails at the latter site. The Magpie was seen at West Gerinish again today. A Lapland Bunting and 61 Whooper Swans were on Bornish machair. Juvenile Glaucous and Iceland Gulls were at Ardvule. 26 Fieldfare and a Goldcrest were in Bornish.

Barra: 3 Mistle Thrush were on the island today.

12th March:

Benbecula: The female Pochard is still on Coot Loch.

South Uist: A drake Scaup was at the south end of Loch Bee and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were in North Bay.

 

11th March:

Lewis: A juvenile Iceland Gull was on Loch Branahuie today.

Benbecula: The female Pochard is still on Coot Loch.

South Uist: 3 juvenile Iceland Gulls and a juvenile Glaucous Gull are at Ardvule.

 

10th March:

Lewis: The drake Green-winged Teal was on Loch Stiapabhat.

North Uist: Two drake American Wigeon were near the Loch Portain turning again this morning.

Barra: A Red-necked Grebe was off the east side of Vatersay and a 2nd winter Glaucous Gull was at Craigston.

9th March:

Benbecula: 8 Fieldfare were on the south side of Rueval.

South Uist: A juvenile Iceland Gull flew south past Ardvule this morning and a further two were in the north bay there. 13 Fieldfare were at Loch Carnan.

Barra: A juvenile / 1st winter Glaucous Gull was at Borve and was later at Craigston beach with an adult.

7th March:

South Uist: 2 Crossbills were briefly in South Glendale this afternoon.

Barra: The 1st winter American Herring Gull was in Castle Bay again this morning.

Marine Sightings: A Humback Whale was seen heading south past the Shiants this afternoon.

 

6th March:

Benbecula: The female Pochard was on Coot Loch again today.

Lewis: A 1st and 2nd winter Glaucous Gull were at the Butt this evening.

North Uist: The Little Stint was seen at Loch Paible again today.

Barra: The 1st winter American Herring Gull was showing well in Castle Bay early afternoon.

4th March:

Benbecula: The female Pochard and Black-tailed Godwit were still at Coot Loch this afternoon.

Barra: The 1st winter American Herring Gull was briefly seen at Garrygall this afternoon.

 

3rd March:

North Uist: A drake Green-winged Teal was on Loch nam Feithean today.

Benbecula: The female Pochard, drake Scaup and Black-tailed Godwit were all at Coot Loch this morning.

South Uist: The Magpie was again at West Gerinish. 2 Common Scoter and 71 Eiders flew north at Ardvule this morning.

Barra: 1st winter American Herring Gull was still commuting between Garrygall and Castle Bay this afternoon.

Barra: Putative 1st winter American Herring Gull at Garrygall this afternoon.

Marine Sightings: A freshly dead Humback Whale is at Traigh Hamara, Barra.
